While in Wanaka be sure to take a bike ride around (part of!) the lake. This is especially nice in Autumn when the poplar trees are golden and the paths are covered in fallen leaves. Bikes can be hires from the info site for $10 / hour and are available for all types of riders including child seats. Take a ride up that lake to sample wines at Rippon Vineyard or stop by a cafe for a coffee. Truely a memorable experience!
It's also lovely in spring. The track around the peninsula to Albert Town bridge is brilliant. If you like cycling check out the bike hire shop over the road too, the bikes are really good quality with disc brakes and are a better bet if you are aiming to do more than just an hour or so.
