I have visited this railway three times, at different times of the year. In my opinion it is the second best steam narrow gauge railway in Germany (after the Harz network, which is superb). On this occasion we visited by taking the train from Dresden (about an hour an a half). If you use a Sachsen Ticket to ride from Dresden to Zittau, then you only have to pay a €5 historic train supplement to ride this narrow gauge railway too. This makes a trip here something of a bargain. Once out of Zittau, the scenery gets better and better. The rock outcrops around Kurort Oybin station are particularly impressive. The railway has the big attraction of simultaneous steam train departures on the two branches from Bertsdorf (to Kurort Oybin and Kurort Jonsdorf), which are quite exciting. The staff obviously take a pride in these, and make sure that the two locomotives are running alongside each other as the lines diverge in front of the signal box at Bertsdorf.
If you want to ride both branches from Bertsdorf, then it's possible to have lunch in the hotel restaurant across the road from Bertsdorf station while waiting for a train on the other branch.
If you like steam railways, then this is certainly one to experience.

Found this place by accident during a day of driving around due to miserable day. Steam trains run during the high season with 3 spurs taking you to different parts within the area. Great fun to watch with a pub opposite. No fascilities though.

The Zittauer Schmalspurbahn is a beautifully preserved steam railway. There are a couple of routes to take on it. We got to Zittau station from Dresden, it was just over an hour's journey on the train.

We took the route from Zittau to Oybin and there was a choice of carriages, from open, closed and dining car. There was also a fully wheelchair accessible carriage, which I thought was brilliant. I would however check as I'm not sure it runs on every train (it should!!)

At one stage, we pulled out of Bertsdorf Junction, with another steam train alongside, which took the other route. Fantastic!!

At Oybin, there are toilets and a small cafe in the station. There is also a fantastic little museum just opposite. Fully dedicated to the railways, it is all in German, but the curator is obviously very dedicated and I wouldn't be surprised if it is his personal lifetime collection. I gained a few insights and he opened an old clock and explained where it had come from and where. Well worth the 1 euro entry fee!!

The Zittauer Schmalspurbahn is a great little narrow gauge railway and unique in that it operates steam trains on a daily basis.

Located about 45min from the beautiful historic city of Görlitz, Zittau is the starting point of the line. From here trains battle uphill into the mountains until Bertsdorf, where the line splits: one branch leading to Oybin, the other to Kurort Jonsdorf. Trains to both destinations depart Bertsdorf at exactly the same time, which is quite a spectacle.

The railway operates a wide variety of locomotives and carriages from various eras. Some trains have open carriages and even a dining car.

It's almost a miracle to find such a fine steam operated railway being preserved and active in daily operation. For anyone who loves steam trains (who doesn't?) this is a great place to visit and certainly worth a detour.
