“Amazing trip into the heart of Nature”

Naujan Lake National Park
Reviewed 28 July 2016

Trip from Puerto Galera took only 2,5 hrs. We were greeted by friendly locals who offered us a boat tour around the lake for 2000 pesos. 6 of us + guide and a captain comfortably fit into a boat. Hint: take a boat with a sun shade. Beautiful banks of the lake are covered by all sorts of wild plants and this together with the hills make a wonderful view. Water was very quiet and still. Altogether it was a very nice relaxing trip around the lake that lasted about 3 hrs. We visited a hot spring which was hot indeed and we noticed that local use to boil snails there, though they didn't offer us any. We didn't see any crocodiles, the captain said that the time was wrong but there are some big ones. Overall it's a remarkable piece of a wild nature and a must-see place.

With a surface area of a little over 8,000 hectares, the Naujan Lake is the largest freshwater lake on Mindoro Island and the 5th largest in the Philippines. The lake is the central feature of the Naujan Lake National Park which encompasses the lake and its the surrounding watershed forests within its over 20,000 hectare boundary.

The park's pristine waters is home to 30 species of fish including the threatened endemic Mindoro Barb (locally known as Pait) and economically important Milkfish (Bangus), Gobies (Biya) and Giant Trevally (Simbad). The surrounding marshlands and forests support 120 species of birds, 24 species of mammals, 36 species of reptiles and amphibians.

The lake is fast becoming a popular birdwatching destination particularly during migration season when thousands of migratory birds visit the lake to rest and feed. These include the Tufted Ducks, Whiskered Terns, Grey Herons and Black-winged Stilts.

An onboard educational tour - Bangklase was launched in November 2014. This tour is managed by the Divine Word College of Calapan and takes students and visitors on a tour of the park while discussing its ecological importance and economic value to the surrounding communities. There is a fee for this tour and it is best to get in touch with the DWCC or the PAMB prior to visiting.

The Protected Area Management Board manages the whole park through the PA Superintendent holding office at DENR-CENRO in barangay Pasi, Socorro. Since 2012, the management has been improving the facilities such as birdwatching observation towers, picnic huts and toilets to promote ecotourism.
