Like other Thai Islands, Sichang sets out to prevent tourists from finding the island. There are signs for the harbour on Sukhumvit which disappear once in Sri Racha. Even my Thai companion could not find how to get to the harbour or where to park our car. Eventually a villainous tuk-tuk driver directed us to a carpark and drove us to the port. His 100 baht fee was exactly the same as the fare for the 12 kms ferry journey!

The island is infested with hideous red millipedes - every surface is covered with them. My Thai companion has declared she will never go back. Surely the municipal authorities could operate some form of pest control? Some of these creatures were over 20 cms long and thicker than a small snake.

This was our first time visiting Ko Si Chang which we decided to do after reading some reviews. This is the closest island to Bangkok and you get here by going to Si Racha which is about 100kms plus from Bangkok. To get to the island, most people take a ferry which will cost you 50 baht per person and leaves every hour. At the moment, the ferries leave from Jarin pier because the other main pier is under renovation but should be completed next year or so. If you are self driving, I don't think you can park on the pier although many cars do. On weekends, the ferries can get quite crowded so they could leave earlier (once the boat is full). Another option is to hire a speedboat which will cost you 1,500 to 2,000 baht, depending on how well you can bargain and which operator you meet up with. The ferry takes 45 minutes, the speedboat cuts travel time by a third, down to 15 minutes. When you arrive on Ko Si Chang, there are many tuk-tuks waiting so you can hire them to take you to your hotel. The island is about 20 sq kms and there are small roads but no private cars allowed, only motorbikes and public pick ups. I just loved how no cars are allowed on the island, and really am curious as to how this island got away with it. For attractions, the main ones we visited were the former palace of King Rama 5, the large public beach, and the lookout point at sunset. The former summer palace is particularly awesome, and make sure you walk all the way to the top. One night on the island is enough to get a way from it all, but please do stay longer if you have the time.

We decided on a visit to Koh SiChang based on the reviews here. Said it was a good place to get away from the regular tourists and they were correct. It's much less crowded and an amazing little island. My party of 3 rented scooters for little of nothing and covered the entire island a few times. Had some of the best food of our entire trip at a hole in the wall restaurant on the far end of town. Visited the Buddha on the hill, a great beach and lots more! Go!

Lots to do here. Relatively quiet island with nice beaches and lots of places to eat. Accommodation is plentiful and will not break the bank. I hired a Tuk Tuk driver for the day and have him 1000 baht for his trouble. He was more than happy.

Ko(h) Sichang island is the closest island to Bangkok. It is a nice little island for relaxation and basic exploration. It isn’t the place for nightlife or major beach activities. It only has one decent swim beach and some nice picturesque rocky ones. The island is very relaxed and pretty quiet without too many tourists. It has some nice areas to explore and see. The Chinese temple has 400 steps to the top, quite strenuous, with a great view from the top. Best bet is to rent a motorbike and explore. Wildlife included monkeys on back roads and tame boars in town. 2 nights is about right but 1 night would be enough for some people. If you want nicer beaches and some nightlife choose Ko(h) Lan instead but it’s a bit farther from Bangkok and quite crowded at main beach.
