Very old and magnificent temple with excellent architecture. Similar to the temple at Darasuram but bigger.

The main deity is Lord Sarabeswarar. People pray to Lord Sarabeswara for relief from illness, worries, court matters, effects of witchcraft, threats from hidden enemies
Lord Sarabesa has in Him the collective powers of Lord Shiva,Lord Vishnu, Pratyangaradevi Durga. Lord Shiva took a very strange form with Yazhi face, human body, eight legs, four hands and two wings to save the world from the blood drops of the demon. He went into space where gravity would not work took out the blood without making it fall on earth which could have resulted in several demons being born again. The temple is huge and very well maintained. Architectural excellence at its best. The walls on the entrance have paintings of the eight veeretanam - meaning the places where Shiva took a different aggressive form to save the world.

I've visited this magnificent temple about 10 years back and we were one of the very few in such huge temple. This time I was delighted to see a fair amount of crowd.
This fabulous temple is one of the best examples of great Chola architecture and you can only wonder how dedicated and magnanimous the kings who built this temple.
Visit the temple during sunset or sunrise to enjoy the beauty of the temple.
