Sacha Lodge

Review of Sacha Lodge
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed May 2, 2012
We recently spent 4 days here. What an interesting and terrific place! You are met at the Quito airport by a representative from Sacha. From Quito you fly 30 minutes over the Andes to a town called Coca. There you are met by representatives from Sacha Lodge who basically take care of everything. From Coca you ride in a long, motorized canoe about 90 minutes down the Napo River. (About 400 miles downstream the Napo runs into the Amazon.) The canoe has a canopy and they have ponchos if it is raining. At the end of the canoe ride you walk about 20 minutes to the edge of a small lake. They paddle you across and voila, you are at the lodge. Rooms are on stilts. Pretty basic but quite nice. Good power, bathrooms, etc. No A.C. but overhead fan. Mosquito screens in place. NOTE: There were not many mosquitos anywhere. They have not had a case of malaria in this area for over 20 years. The central lodge area is very nice. Great bar. Meals are quite good and buffet. Each day you go out for 2-3 trips with a guide from the lodge and a local guide. Our guides were great! They will show you all kinds of creatures, plants, demonstrate how locals use the plants, etc. You will see lots of monkeys, birds, ants, crawly creatures, caimans, the forest canopy, etc. We saw no snakes. You can swim in the lake and yes there are pirrhanas in it but not the kind you see in the movies. Perfectly safe and the water is refreshing. This is a great place to see the Amazon basin and easy to get there.

There's nothing else to say. Our guide, David, and our native guide, Segundo, deserve a special shout-out! They made the whole thing an amazing experience by spotting the most obscure things, like hummingbird nests, owl monkeys, tarantulas, and even a juvenile rainbow boa! The rooms were great, the food delicious, and overall, the experience was fantastic. The property is stunning -- set right on this gorgeous lake with a high dive and a deck perfect for sunbathing. This is a must if you come to Ecuador!

Room tip: We were in Cabin 10, which was quite a walk from the main lodge but COMPLETELY worth it! It feels like you're on an adventure in the jungle every time you walk to your room. A bit scary at night, though, so probably not too good for really little ones! (we were ages 12/14)

This hotel was amazing, and the rooms were completely sealed from mosquitoes, a good thing. I also enjoyed the hikes very much, and our guide was great!

We very much enjoyed our stay at the Sacha Lodge in the Ecuador Rain Forest. The service was great. The Naturalist Guide (ask for Gus) and the Native Guide (ask for Wilson) were outstanding. The food was top notch considering everything has to be brought in by canoe from Coca which is 50 miles up the Napo river. We could not be happier with our stay at the Sacha Lodge.

This lodge is fabulous - and we are fussy!! The journey in is an adventure and the lodge itself is fantastic. The rooms are great, the food is excellent, the staff are friendly and the organization of the daily activities is personal and well executed. A real must for both adults and children.

Wanted a NON-commercial non-crowded amazon experience.....found it here. Getting to Sacha is an experience.....making you symbollically feel like you are leaving civilization behind.....just what we wanted! guides both native and english speaking were great. Wildlife and environment lived up to our expectations! Highly recommend.

Room tip: do not bother bringing anything fancy or even a hair dryer......they do laundry fast....so light is best!
