The Stepped Pyramid in the Saqqara Necropolis, is approximately 25 kilometres south of the Giza Pyramids. The Saqqara Necropolis is an ancient Egyptian mortuary with a vast courtyard surrounded by ceremonial structures and located near the ancient city of Memphis.

While the Stepped Pyramid is the most famous and prominent structure in this necropolis, there are many other pyramids that can be seen from this elevated site in the surrounding desert. As we trekked around the burial ground, it became very windy and we witnessed several dust devils making their way across the desert.

Saqqara was the royal cemetery of ancient Memphis and an active burial ground for over 3500 years. It is Egypt’s largest archeological site. The necropolis consists of eleven major pyramids built for Old Kingdom pharaohs, and hundreds of smaller tombs for their subjects. The Step Pyramid of Djoser is the most famous pyramid at Saqqara. As Egypt’s oldest pyramid built out of stone and not mud bricks, it was the model that subsequent pyramid builders followed. When you admire the Pyramids of Giza, remember that it all started here! The Saqqara Pyramids are part of the pyramid fields that UNESCO inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1979. The main monuments, including the Step Pyramid Complex, are in North Saqqara. This is the area most tours visit. In the distance, we could see the pyramids of South Saqqara but we didn’t stop there.

One of the oldest pyramids of Egypt. It is interesting to see and a little different than the other pyramids around Egypt. As with all historic sites they are still doing excavations around this complex and finding new things all the time.
