I did not know I was going to this attraction, until we actually got there (friends were providing a small surprise).
Although I had heard about the Catacombs before, I didn't think I'd be interested to visit. But, the surprise was just how interesting the catacombs were.
They were surprisingly quite comfortable and the guide was very amusing, entertaining and informative.
If you are visiting Odessa, I'd recommend the visit - both for the attraction itself - but also for the history of Odessa.

This is a must do when in Odessa, There was a group of 6 of us and we got dropped outside a local neighbourhood with no sign of an entrance, then the guide met us , and after a bit of health and safety , we went into a red tin shack, given a helmet and a flashlight and headed down the stairs with the guide, The first part was about the bunkers for the cold war then into the older caves, the narrative was very good and switch from serious issues to humour depending on the situation, lots to see in the tunnel. it ok a few hours but flew by as it was so good, The young lady who a great guide, it gives a real feeling of the history of Odessa through the centuries, interesting surprises in some of the locations,

The catacombs of Odessa are a real surprise rarely heard about but very interesting. We started our trip in a taxi being driven across Odessa to our rendezvous point. We arrived at a very unassuming nissen hut by the side of the road surround by a few people. O approaching the hut we could see the stairs leading down into the dark. We were equipped with hard hats and small but powerful torches. There were about 12 people in our party and one guide. Unfortunately the tour is in Russian only but on occasion the guide interpreted some more salient points such as" don't get lost or leave the party ,there are 2000km of tunnels its unlikely we will find you". The tour lasted 3 hours and we walked about 2km.We were also given a cake and a shot of a typical Ukraine spirit. A very interesting tour and very surprising perhaps a bit long but well worth the effort. If you are ever in Odessa its a must.

Reputed to be the logest catacombs, much longer than those of Paris and Rome, these catacombs under Odessa are actually limestone mines and not burial chambers.
At various times they were used by smugglers and Soviet partisans during WW 2.
There is a war museum on the surface which is worth a look.
In the tunnels at various places you would find graffiti, shrines and hideouts. There was even a small partisan medical facility.
It goes without saying that you need to go through the official entrance and with an official guide.

Interesting places with alot to see from cold war, 2nd world war, smugglers, bandits etc. If you don't speak Russian take an english guide! The Russian guide talks alot! So you need to wait long before you will move on to the next part of the catacombs.
