Three hours of pure perfection, with an amazing guide, interesting stories from Odessa history. Catacombes are almost supernatural place, we lost track of time... We travel a lot, but visit to Odessa Catacombes was the best touristic thing I have ever experienced. And best of all, it is not touristic at all, it is authentic. Must see...

Located about a 20 minute drive from Odessa. you cannot go through the catacombs alone without a guide. There is a local guide there but If you dont know Russian you need to arrange an english speaking guide at the city because walking around the tunnels is not enough if somebody is not explaining you about what you are seeing. As you proceed through the tunnels you start to understand how vast they are. We were told that there was 2500km of underground tunnels. The catacombs are generally very easy to walk through, having rather low ceilings at certain points. These were used by resistance fighters during World War II. At the end of the tour you go up 4 stories of steps which lead you to a museum where memorabilia from the WWII is displayed. It is quite cool inside the tunnels so take something you can wear to warm you up. This is not a trip for those with claustrophobia. All in all it was an unforgetable experience.

Catacombs have been used by many different groups for smuggling and partisan fighting. Very interesting and unique to Odessa and it's history. A must do!

Well worth going to the catacombs to learn some of Odessa's history, and about the anti-fascist partisans who used them as a base. You can go by mashrutka if you speak Russian or Ukrainian - its about a 30 minute drive from the bus depot by the Railway station - but you need to pre-book a guide to get in. Useful to take a torch.

The catacombs lay outside of Odessa and is definitely a must-do when visiting Odessa. To enjoy it the best way, it is better to go there with a guide who is able to share a lot of information and history, and give a better context to many areas underground.

It can get claustrophobic, and pitch dark so bring along a torchlight. The end of the tour led to a museum on ground level. The museum was small but has interesting displays.
