It took a little while to warm up to the Novotel as we have been to bigger flashier resorts. The front reception was very laid back, there was one restaurant beachside, and the resort was getting a little dated. But after being there for 11 days, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and wished we could stay for longer.

The staff are professional and friendly especially the Manager Mr Oskar who made us feel very welcome, and Jib who worked at the beach restaurant. The rooms are very spacious - we stayed in a 2 br suite which was massive. Our young kids enjoyed the pool, and the beachside restaurant was reasonably priced. They have a shuttle bus that takes you to Central Samui. If not, the taxi fare is around 200 bhat to head into town or around 300 bhat to Bophut (if you are there on Friday nights, the Bophut fisherman walk night markets are fantastic). There are some nice beach restaurants and thai massage places (also laundry and chemists, etc) nearby which make it convenient. There are some friendly local food vendors on the beach so you can pickup some fresh cut fruit, corn, etc for reasonable prices.

The beach in front of the resort was a little rough on the feet, but you can wade out a short distance to the sand bank to experience the nicer sand. Overall, this was a very relaxing resort.

Room Tip: Beach side rooms

Once I and my friend landed BKK, before applying for the VOA we decided to fly Samui. We didn't have tickets as well. But to fill in the VOA form, we booked this hotel in Samui and got our VOA. Came out of the arrival of Suvarnabhumi Airport and ran the departure level and booked our flights to Samui.
The flight was late due to rain in BKK and checked into the hotel quite late at around 11 pm. We were warmly welcomed and given an awesome room. But I reckon that room should be for couple or honeymooners, not for two guys travelling on "just for fun" holidays. The room was big and spacious. We got the hill view room on the other side of the road, but the sea was still visible from the balcony. The Chaweng city centre was a just 5mins drive from the hotel, but a private taxi at the gate of the Hotel would charge heavily. 200B. You won't realise you even sat in the taxi!! It wasn't far and the fare was exorbitantly high.
The property also has a sea-side property with the beach which was serene and beautiful. With no waves and calm shore, I could see the fishes in the clear water. No snorkelling kits needed. The beach was picturesque. Anyone staying at the property must have not less than 50 photos here! :)
The hill-side property had a different restaurant and swimming pool, while the sea-side also has a restaurant and a pool. The breakfast was quite a filler.
Love the stay there, but on the 2nd night, we wanted to extend a night more and the guy at the reception said YES and to be rest assured, and we went ahead and book our day tour to Ang Thong National Marine Park. We were supposed to be picked up by 7 am, and when we came to the reception they said the extension was not possible, and we had to check out because our tour will finish only at evening 6 pm. We had to run to our room to pack the entire thing and the other people for the tour in the van was waiting for us. It was so embarrassing! Spoilt my entire tour mood, because after that tiring tour I knew I had no place to rest but to go and search hotel!
Anyways, it was a memorable trip! Hotels like Novotel should also have people who're fluent and good in English to avoid such miscommunications and avoid harassment to the travellers and tourist.

Room Tip: Try Sea-side property.

Having a great time at Novotel. Was nervous after reading some of the negative reviews on trip advisor- but Novotel has really delivered! Free wifi (not too fast, but not here to control a space programme) great breakfasts, nice pool, fantastic staff, this has been a great spot to base for a holiday

The good
-The friendly staff and services. Especially, Manager, Mr Oskar.
-The beautiful beach which is very convenient infront of the hotel
-free shutter services to shopping mall
-good food and restaurants outside of hotel

The bad
-We stayed in a suite and its just too dark at some spots like the vanity and desk area. The desk with no Lighting! No ceiling lights. So at night its a dark scary spot at a corner. In the end, we requested for a table lamp.

- mosquitos in bedroom! There were also gaps all round the doors so there was no way to keep the pesty insects out. Thank goodness for the mosquitoes coil provided.

-the food at the restaurants need alot of improvement. Had western and thai food and its quite mediocre.

-Make-up room service to improve. Furniture not pushed into place with soiled towel still on sofa...hmm
