After booking this hotel we read some of the reviews and as usual there was a mix of good and not so good. We wondered if we had made the right choice. I am pleased to write here that my wife and I had a wonderful time at this hotel for seeing in the New Year. Great location, very good service from pick up at the station and return. The restaurant choice catered for varied tastes and the food was absolutely delicious. The weather at first did not cooperate until a day before our departure and we could enjoy the fantastic views of both the sea and Lake Toya. We also enjoyed the free entertainment throughout the days we stayed there, music recitals, magic shows, sake tasting and more.

Room Tip: All rooms either overlook the sea or the lake. Either views are wonderful.

I will try to keep this review as short as possible.

We are a family of three, with one child, we are international tourists and we have booked a room with two beds in this hotel, which is great in terms of location and facilities.

The positives: The hotel is very clean and the property is large with dedicated access to snow facilities, the room has a good size and has a spectacular view on the ocean.

There is also a small shop where you can buy or rent a snow gear for you and your family, you can also book snow activities in advance like Ski lessons, Sight seeing tours..etc other good shops are also available and they sell many goods.

Special thanks to:

1- Kumi, from Reservation, she was professional and going beyond her way to ensure that everything is going well.
2- Nozomi: The coach who gave us the Ski lesson, very nice and patient.

3- The trainee lady at the concierge desk: very attentive and always wants to help.

The negatives: and here where I decided to give a lower rating to this hotel.

1- Room service:

- This is the worst room service I’ve ever experienced in my life, orders always come late, no matter how soon they tell you it will come, they never stick to their delivery time.

- The knife and forks sometimes come dirty.

- In many times they bring the wrong order, and also the wrong quantity, for example you order 3 orders and they bring you 2.

- Lack of knowledge about food: and this incident happened twice, one incident was that we received wrong information from the lady taking our order, as we don’t eat pork we asked her to tell us the meals that don’t contain pork, we were given certain options and we ordered, the next day we asked to order the same meal, but I just wanted to confirm again that it doesn’t contain pork!! I was shocked when I was told that it contains pork!! I explained that this is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated, but surprisingly they took the matter lightly and asked me to order something else!!

- Food portions are never right, for example you order tea for three people and they give you what’s enough for one!

2- The cafe: You barely feel welcomed when you sit, and in one incident we changed our minds and decided to leave without ordering, the guy came and asked us to leave immediately!

3- Housekeeping: it is good but they always forget to put enough water for the three of us (they always put 1 or 2 small bottles per day and ask us to pay if we need more) and sometimes they forget to re-stock the coffee and tea.

Conclusion:

It is a good property with spectacular location, the service could be much improved.

Ueda is not helpful at all and she is very rude. She demands us to return room keys to the front desk even we left the keys in the room. She also mentioned a 1000 Yen charge per key however when we asked for the written statement of this fine, she couldn’t find it. We have no idea why a receptionist lies about 1000 Yen fine when hotel guest pays a much higher fare for room fee.

Off peak travel has its pluses. The hotel wasn't as crowded, and the fall colors were amazing. We stayed in a suite overlooking Lake Toya, and that was worth every yen paid. To be sure, there wasn't much else to see or do in the hotel, apart from the onsen, pool and G8 meeting commemorative spots. Thank goodness I drove and had a rental car to take us down to the shops and restaurants lining the lake. The 8 minute cable car ride down to the hotel's pizzeria was enjoyable as it offered a splendid view of the Nakajima islands in the middle of the lake. The pizza with anchovies and piccante wasn't bad either.

Though the hotel is a bit isolated yet if you need a break for a day or two in the midst of Hokkaido nature, this is the place to be. You may pamper yourself amidst the lavish facilities which hosted the 2008 G 8 summit. Summer or early autumn is the time to go, yet in winter it gets another beauty. You'll have the view of the Toya lake on one side and the bay on the other. Majestic Mt Yotei is there in the distance reminding Mt Fuji. You may enjoy the fireworks of nearby Toyako town at night going there. Service is excellent. There is a golf course. Visit the wedding chapel too.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the lake and the Mt Yotei.
