Not necessary to go on a tour! Get a private water taxi and make your own arrangements, sight seeing, snorkeling, swimming, etc. Out water taxi operator was very accommodating, stopping where ever we wanted to .
Tour took about three hours and really worth it.
Maya Bay is beautiful but just too busy with tourists which really spoils it. They bring tourists from a long way away all day and it was just too crowded.
+ Beautiful but the view destroyed by countless of boats and people.

Get there early! We took the 6:30am long tail boat (private) and headed straight there and there was already 100 people there. Can't imagine what it would be like any later in the day.
Stunning beach and views but way too many people allowed to visit at once and the disgusting race that we are leave crap everywhere.
Tourists should be regulated and minimise numbers and boats should not be allowed to line the beach.
