If you want to get away from people, traffic, television, noise, etc., and you want to hear the sounds of the ocean and have to walk carefully because there are so many hermit crabs on the ground, then Blue Orchid is the place.

Bill was a fantastic host. Super friendly, funny, and engaging. Unfortunately, we only booked three nights there. We wanted to stay longer, and Bill thought he had a solution, but it didn’t work out (too full!). When he told us he wouldn’t have room, he offered us the newly-renovated honeymoon suite for our last two days. It was a generous surprise and an amazing suite. It had a massive upper floor balcony with sweeping ocean and jungle views, huge bathroom and bedroom, semi-open living area with TV, sofa, and chairs, with a 20 ft tall thatched roof. It even had a ping pong table and something I’ve never seen in a hotel before – – a hanging punching bag! So cool!

The swimming pool and the bar are open 24 hours a day. Bill seems to run the resort like a place for his friends to hang out. There aren’t a bunch of rules and regulations, you’re supposed to behave like an adult and respect the grounds and your fellow lodgers. Everyone I met was super chill, so you could either hang out and talk with Bill, Michelle, or other guests, or go off and be on your own. Plenty of spots for privacy on the property.

Speaking of the property, it is the last in line of three or four nice resorts. If you drive there by yourself, you might think you’re lost… The last lane that you turn on to get to the property has a sign that says something about private property. Ignore it. That is not for the road, that is for the property along the road. Turn down the lane and keep going. You’ll pass a couple of huge humps in the road. We weren’t sure that our rental car had enough clearance to go over the bumps, but it was fine. This is definitely off the beaten path…

The food was really good. We arrived late on the first night, I called ahead. The kitchen was closing soon, but Bill had them whip us up a couple of dishes for when we arrived an hour later. That was really thoughtful… And delicious! One small suggestion for the kitchen… They serve fresh tuna. Next time, I’d like to have it just seared instead of cooked :-). Would be a good idea to ask the guest how they want it cooked. Portions of everything we’re very generous.

The normal rooms were super clean, spartan, with no TVs or telephones. This was perfectly fine. As I sit on my balcony in another resort now, I can hear the neighbors listening to an NBA basketball game. Not exactly the sounds of paradise…

The property offers many diving services. The sea in front of the property is filled with coral. You can snorkel directly from the property, but be careful not to damage the coral in any way. There is also a walkway that you can take to get into deeper water and snorkel from there. We also walked down the beach and found someone who could take us out for snorkeling for a few hours for 1500 pesos.

The bed was super comfortable and had a mosquito net which worked very well - or there were no mosquitoes around - because I never got a single bite.

If I ever come back to Cebu, I will stay here. And I still owe Bill a ukulele performance and tuning session :-)

A couple of notes…

1. Don’t get a SMART SIM card for your phone!!!! It will work at the airport, but nowhere else. You will be disappointed. When you call customer support, they will tell you that they will give you a response in 10 business days to your problem. Nice…. And you can’t apply for a refund until after your subscription. Ends. They basically steal your money. Get Global.

2. Almost everything requires cash in the Philippines, including hotels. And of course, none of the hotels have safes. It’s not easy to find places to get money. The best thing to do is find a 7-11 in the city centers. There’s usually an ATM nearby.

3. We came at the end of September, which is the rainiest season. If you look at the weather forecast for Cebu, it will show rain almost every day. But it is a big island, so it’s likely to rain somewhere. Maybe we were lucky, but when it rained, it was usually very brief, not a major thunderstorm. The weather did not interfere with our vacation at all. In fact, being a little overcast kept things cooler. When the sun came out, it was pretty hot.

A very quiet, peaceful small resort. The rooms are functional and clean (hot shower, AC, comfy bed with mosquito net). The rooms have sea views. The pool is lovely. The food was very good. There was a decent drink menu. The diving staff were excellent - friendly, knowledgeable and well organised. The diving was very good. Great visibility, lovely coral and lots of turtles. The dives are all very close to the resort. I would recommend this hotel and would happily return. Great diving, great ambience, and good food.

Hi Ujuzi,

Thanks for this great review! When we read your review to our staff members: housekeeping, restaurant, kitchen and boat crew they were all really happy to hear these kind words. We agree Moalboal has some fine diving and all the dive sites are close by so you can enjoy your afternoon with an happy hour drink or explore the rest of Moalboal! Hope we can welcome you soon again!

Throughly enjoyed our stay at the blue orchid. After a week in the Philippines eating all local flavors it was nice that the kitchen had a perfect combination of local or other options so that we could choose what we felt like eating. The chicken schnitztel sandwich got from us.

We rented motor bikes/scooter at the hotel to go to the whale sharks, we went on a holiday and it was super hectic but we are so glad we went as that was our only day to go. On the way back we drove ourselves to a waterfall and did a bit of climbing and cliff jumping. Weeeeeeee.

What I would have done differently, stayed longer. Bill does scuba certification and dive lessons. He can have you certified in as little as one day of you have done the online training in advance. If you plan to get dive certified I recommend you email the hotel in advance so they can inform you of what to do in advance.

This place is eco friendly - super accommodating - and they are just great hosts. Thanks for the great break from reality.

* photos - view from our balcony day/night. By the pool and check in area. The inside of our room after we have made a mess in it, sorry forgot to take a before photo - but there is air conditioning and the shower is nice as well, I appreciated the mesh netting over the bed as well - I sleep very soundly, beds are comfy and clean.

First, let me say that this place is quite off the beaten path, kind of on the outskirts of the island. It's expensive, but not overly so. The grounds are beautiful and they offer a lot of day trips (snorkeling, diving, canyoning, etc.) right from there. The food is eh, but what it lacks there, it makes up for in beauty.

We had a room overlooking the water, right on the end near the dining area - Left the door open at night, no issues, except for two nights where I was woken up to the sounds of a crab walking around the room! We promptly shooed it away, but it was entertaining to say the least!

They earned my respect one morning when our tour operator for canyoning at Kawasan Falls had failed to pick us up and they organized a tour from their operator for us on the fly. When the tour operator finally showed up hours later, they sent them on their way as they didn't feel it was safe to drive my family there (including a young child) on the mopeds they showed up on.

No real complaints other than I wish they had a) provided a life jacket for my 8 year old on the snorkeling trip we booked through them and b) had mentioned the jellyfish! My daughter was a bit traumatized by that experience and didn't leave the boat for the rest of the trip.
