In February, many restaurants in Le Grau du Roi are closed. Of the few that are open, this one does not end up high on our list of recommendations. The food was ok, but somewhat bland, the service not what you'd expect at a nice restaurant. It was the lack of alternatives that made us have dinner here.

We chose the 28.50 euro menu for our anniversary. Cold, strangely gritty risotto, followed by pave de boeuf which was supposed to be cooked bleu. It was an odd grey colour in the middle and hard as rock around the edges. Clearly either microwaved to defrost, or pre cooked boil in the bag garbage. I confronted the owner, who insisted it was fresh. Yeah, right. Odd cold purple potato mixture on the plate. Everything was cold, including the plate. Dessert - tiramisu was industrial cream with a tiny bit of coffee flavoured sponge at the bottom, and one choc mousse which had split and was grainy. We got back from our holiday yesterday and today I looked at our bank statement. The restaurant has taken 10 euros more than the bill. We paid by bank card but didn't look closely at the machine obviously. Thieves as well. Shocking.

Tuesday lunch at the end of January means there are few options. After checking out three highly recommended restaurants and all were closed, we decided to try Cap'tain for their 3-course 14.90€ menu. For appetizers, my husband had the four oysters on the half-shell and was pleased with their freshness. I had the beef carpaccio which was an average serving. We both had dorade for a main dish and I was disappointed the fish seemed to be steamed (though there were no bones), served with mashed potatoes and zucchini spaghetti stir-fry. For dessert we tried the only two desserts which were house made, chocolate mousse which was grainy and tiramisu which was a light version thereof.

So, why should I rate Cap'tain as average? The outdoor heated seating facing the beach made a January lunch memorable!
