Review of Straits Quay

Straits Quay
Reviewed 4 April 2018

The E&O hotel had a shuttle service where it dropped off guests here. Thye have a vested interest in this waterfront retail and apartment development.

It was still a work in progress when we visited with some shops open.

It may be of more interest when it is completed.

Last time we visited Straits Quay is was still being developed. A lot of work has been done since then and it is a great place to visit. There are many shops, bars and restaurants, it is built round a marina and even has a (not working) lighthouse!

There is a regular complimentary coach run from most hotels in the Batu Ferringhi area, and the local buses and of course taxis are all available. We were there during the Chinese New Year and the decorations were very good, we were just sorry not to be there when there was a Lion Dancing troupe visiting.

You can also walk quite a long way on the promenade that stretches quite a way along from the Straits building to wear off the food and drink you have just had!

The shops etc are all on the ground and first floors, with apartments on the upper floors which help to shelter the restaurants etc on the water front.

A good afternoon or evening visit to make.

The yacht marina in the middle of the complex is quite full with boats, but the numerous restaurant terraces around it are quite empty at lunch time. This huge area is already showing signs of deterioration due to humidity though new high rises are busily being constructed. The old lighthouse functions as a history center sponsored by Eastern & Oriental company, one of the main builders. From the wide boardwalk towards Guerney Drive you can admire expensive seafront villas with pools. Land is being claimed from the sea just in front of them for new developments and the controversial undersea tunnel to mainland.

Seems to live be up to its name of Penang's first seafront retail marina. It is a one stop centre with an abundance of offerings from food , retail, leisure and tour services. Can also participate in water limousine and harbour cruise.
