We stayed at the Alka hotel when we found that our booked accommodation at the Panorama hotel was dreadful. Do not stay at the Panorama under any circumstance.
The Alka is large hotel about halfway down the Mall. It is reasonably expensive.
It is several stories high and luckily there is a lift although you do have to walk up a flight of steep steps to get to it. We chose a standard room and a suite for our party of three. Both rooms had seating outside from which one can enjoy a morning coffee or a snack in the evening while watching the passing parade within the hotel courtyard or on the Mall below. Some views of the lake can be had, although most are obscured by the trees. There is a pool table on the fourth floor.
The rooms were relatively dark with a myriad of confusing switches to be operated to turn on the various appliances and lighting. As with Indian TVs. a number of remote controls came into play and were difficult and annoying to operate.
The suite consisted of a bedroom, large ensuite which had seen better days and a small anteroom with three overstuffed and uncomfortable chairs. A coffee table completed the furniture.

The bathroom, although large could have done with a good renovation. The outlet for the shower was a small rathole in the corner and the shower screen was broken in two places. There was no where to hang towels to dry. However, a small stand was available for use among the five or so rooms on that floor. Insufficient toilet paper was provided and the toilet seat moved. The oversized tap over the basin was installed poorly. It leaned and shook when you turned it on.
Each floor had its own - dining area - which may be pleasant to sit out on in summer. However the mosquitos would put paid to any such pleasure.
We did not eat at the restaurant as it charged 18% GST when restaurants down the road only charged 2%.
The waiting area was pleasant and the desk staff tried to be helpful however their command of English was poor. wifi was available but a new log in was required each day.
There were frequent power cuts which meant the hotel generator (next to our room) cut in and was noisy. I imagine that the frequency of power cuts would increase during summer.
There is no heating in the room which would mean the rooms (already chilly) would be freezing in winter or the shoulder months.
The key tags are large and clumsy and make locking the door frustrating.
Although a pleasant location, the Alka is away from Mallital and some of the better eateries, ie Shakleys. Dominos is next door together with a number of shacks selling street food.
Few foreigners visit Nainital as there is nothing of importance to see there. All the pristine mountain beauty that was there 40+ years ago has been destroyed by greedy overdevelopment. Every hillside is a rubbish tip.

Room Tip: Suites are on level 2 and standard rooms on level 3. Avoid rooms next to the generator.

I had booked this hotel on the spot. Very co operative staff made my booking process very easy, hotel interior and cleaning was really impressive hotel working staff help me to carry luggage to my room and they provided dine in facilities too. Room which provided to me was enough specious decorative with ultra color paint, nice fragrance i could feel from the outside of window. It was great experience i had gathered while living stay.

One of my friend recently stayed in this hotel as she was on her solo trip. One of the hotel staff came inside her room without her permission. She even lodged a complaint to the owner but no action.

Shame, that we talk about women safety but women can’t even travel solo.
