Did 5 dives over two days with dive link and most where enjoyable however there were a few moments I was disappointed with the level professionalism.
It's all about diving with the Thresher sharks when on Malapascua Island. First dive was lined up to go see the sharks but we left late. We where the last boat to arrive on site and most other groups were surfacing as we were hoping in the water. Luckily I saw 5 sharks but not much was done to try and get there to give the greatest chance of seeing them. Also I organized Nitrox to stay deeper longer. But that was pointless because I was diving with non nitrox divers and the dive itself wasn't very long. There were a couple of other dives also that were very short and I have no idea why the guide took us back to the boat so early? One other disappoint thing was a couple of people doing training and the instructor was clearly badly hungover, 1 that being dangerous and 2 not very professional.
One other disappoint thing and this isn't necessarily Divelink's fault, it seemed there wasn't much co-ordination between the dive shops and the dive sites we were going to. On a couple of occasion it felt like every dive shop on the island was at the same location, just too many people underwater.
Some of the Dives I did the guides were great and found some great sea life especially on a night dive, the best night dive I have ever done.
Overall I enjoyed the diving, but a couple of issues put me off. Maybe bad timing.
Divelink is one of the cheapest on the island so if your on a tight budget this could be a good option.
Malapascua is known for the thresher sharks that come closer to the surface less than an hour away from the island. This is known by everyone, and all the dive shops offer dives to the site. So the difference between the shops is the service provided, and in that respect Divelink is unique. Lodging is not an issue as there is a decent hotel next to the dive shop. It is not luxury accommodation, but it is clean and the air-conditioning works well. They also provide the usual amenities expected of a hotel, but I can't remember if they included toiletries. The dive shop itself is somewhat smaller than the other shops, and located just around the corner from the main stretch of tourist accommodations and shops. This means you get closer to the village where the locals gather, and this is consistent with Divelink's main selling point.
Of all the dive shops I have seen on the island, Divelink is the simplest and most true to the Philippine spirit. They have arguably the most number of local dive masters/instructors, and are extremely hospitable. The fees they charge are very competitive. Walking around the island, it is clear that the other shops are more commercial than Divelink. Divelink has great interest in developing Malapascua into a sustainable community, and is actively involved in conservation work and education for the public. If you are solely interested in seeing the sea creatures and want to have a more luxurious or fancy experience above water, Divelink is not for you. However, if you like to get closer to the culture of the people whose land you are visiting in addition to diving, Divelink is at present the best option you have.
If you ever going to visit this tiny paradise island its worth every penny of your hard earn cash
For diving choose the locals Divelink who have been diving this island for years before all the european and western guys turned up,
All the guides/ instructors/ dive masters who work here have years of experience on this island and will indeed look after you from novice to experienced divers
At first, my team was so happy for finding the thresher sharks. But on the afternoon, we were so disappointed..after our third dive at around 2pm, we waited so long on the boat, because other divers wanted to dive night dive at 6pm. Nobody ask if we are ok. It seems that nobody cares that we waited so long, with our wet wetsuits still on. The dive shop doesn't have any proper regulation and rule for their guest safety. My husband now is suffering of fever and flu.
Anyway, we are thankful to our guide Jay, he was been kind to us, but maybe he was just doesn't know yet what is the right thing to do with that kind of situation. And also to Nato, he was been accomodating. But not with James, we heard him talking against us with the divers he guided..which is not right, because although he was not our guide, we were still a guest if Divelink. He is somekind a rude and unprofessional... maybe he treated us like that because I am a FILIPINA.
Had a great time diving with the Divelink team and staying in their room directly opposite the dive shop.
James the Dive Master was professional and knew his way around (underwater) very well; and yes, the threshers were eye candies and worth the early morning rude awakening. Some divers from other dive shops joined us after some bad service elsewhere and loved the experience so much they stayed on.
Do chat and mingle with the super friendly boatees, they made those long boat trips out to the dive spots so much more fun.
Certainly would recommend to anyone who loves sharks enough to come all the way to Malapascua :)
Had a great time diving with Divelink Cebu!
Saw thresher sharks, a pair of cuttlefish (changing colors and texture!!), hermit crabs, mandarin fish doing the mating dance, etc...amazing dives!
Malapascua was hit hard from the typhoon, so it's good to support the locals and help them rebuild their community. :) Hope the year 2014 will be a better year! :)
