Living near Charis seafood , I often walk by and watch the local pelican activity. At 1.30 most days these very large birds fly in and wait patiently in the lagoon for the fish off cuts from Charis Seafood cafe.
Quite a large crowd will gather to watch this spectacle, often bus loads of tourists stop as well. Cafe owner will come out with large bins of seafood waste and the pelicans with their sharp eyesight hone in!
The birds literally march up the beach en masse , open their very large mouths , catch the fish , retreat, and the bird behind takes its place.
Have your camera ready for great photography.
Good park for relaxation/ swimming, eating in one of the many cafes around.
Plenty of accommodation close by plus transport handy.

it's very interesting and amazing that so many Pelicans gathers together for a feed and you don't get many chances to see that anywhere else.
imagine pelicans doing the same trick as your dog, throw food and they catch it in the air!

it gets really crowded and lots of tourists so better be prepared if u want to have a view or good photo.

I have been to see this a few times now as it fascinates me the way the pelicans seem to know what time it is and start gathering on the beach to wait to be fed.
They just stand around waiting not bothered by the crowds gathering to watch them!

At 1.30 pm, the guy comes out of Charis Seafoods with the buckets of fish 'bits' and sets up the area where he will feed them, while he is doing this the pelicans are slowly walking up the beach to the area and then waiting for him to be ready.

Then the fun begins, don't stand too close or you will be covered with fish blood and guts, but be close enough to see that they get a feed and then go to the back of the line again so the next ones can eat. A must see if you are in Surfers Paradise!

just behind Charis seafood the pelicans start gathering quite early as they know it will be feeding time at 13.30 and it is great to see them flying into the lake. before the feeding you can enjoy a swim in the lake or some fish&chips (which is not bad but not fantastic either).
The pelicans know where the food will come from so they flock to that area. Unfortunately the tourists know as well and just before 13.30 busloads of tourists are unloaded and stand everywhere between the animals without much respect for them. If you want a picture of the animals without the idiots in it you'd better get it before hand.
Unfortunately at feeding time you'll probably have to use your elbows to see something. But if you do, it is interesting entertainment. the pelicans use their elbows too to catch the fish remains that fly over their heads.

A good little trip to do if you are in the neighbourhood with free entertainment ..
