I have been to see this a few times now as it fascinates me the way the pelicans seem to know what time it is and start gathering on the beach to wait to be fed.
They just stand around waiting not bothered by the crowds gathering to watch them!

At 1.30 pm, the guy comes out of Charis Seafoods with the buckets of fish 'bits' and sets up the area where he will feed them, while he is doing this the pelicans are slowly walking up the beach to the area and then waiting for him to be ready.

Then the fun begins, don't stand too close or you will be covered with fish blood and guts, but be close enough to see that they get a feed and then go to the back of the line again so the next ones can eat. A must see if you are in Surfers Paradise!

just behind Charis seafood the pelicans start gathering quite early as they know it will be feeding time at 13.30 and it is great to see them flying into the lake. before the feeding you can enjoy a swim in the lake or some fish&chips (which is not bad but not fantastic either).
The pelicans know where the food will come from so they flock to that area. Unfortunately the tourists know as well and just before 13.30 busloads of tourists are unloaded and stand everywhere between the animals without much respect for them. If you want a picture of the animals without the idiots in it you'd better get it before hand.
Unfortunately at feeding time you'll probably have to use your elbows to see something. But if you do, it is interesting entertainment. the pelicans use their elbows too to catch the fish remains that fly over their heads.

A good little trip to do if you are in the neighbourhood with free entertainment ..

Nothing like seeing the Pelicans gliding in the air waiting to line up for their daily feed. Living locally we always take visitors over to watch the daily procession of these fascinating birds.

Worth to came earlier because for me was more interesting to see how do the pelicans gathering to the feeding spot, rather that they eat. Big birds flying above you and walking to the coast, when they feel needed time ;)
Not much people around, so you could clearly see all the process.
