Our main reason to book this particular hotel was it had a gym and it was inexpensive. We love our holidays and have 6 holidays booked this year, we booked this as a cheap (£450 pw each all inclusive) extra gettaway and were expecting not great things but at least what they said in the brochure. So to start with the point about the gym, it is definitely not what it looks like in the pictures, we were given the gym key and were in there 2 minutes, all of the equipment is broken, there was no treadmill, one bike which was broken and the weights equipment was also all broken, in fact the only thing in the gym that was in a usable condition was a mat...hmm. There is a really nice coastal walk from the nueve horizonte area where the hotel is into calleta and the distance if you go from the beginning of the path right to the far end of calleta is around 12km, its a really nice walk, very windy but spectacular views along the coastline and there are lots of wild chipmunks living in the rocks along the coast who appreciate the nuts you can buy in the local shops. This is how we got our exercise in every day because we were not able to use the equipment in the gym.
The staff in the reception area were very friendly and helpful, we aren't the pool loving kind and like to get out and see the area we are visiting, the reception staff were very helpful in terms of recommending trips and places to go and even more helpful allowing us to keep our room later on our departure day. However there is no wifi, the wifi we were told was broken and would be fixed during the week, it wasnt, so we had to go to the nearby costa tropical hotel to gain access to free wifi.
The rooms, we had 320, were very basic, not quite what I would describe as 3 star and they were cold at night, although we could have paid to have a room heater, with the wind whistling through the windows we suspected it wouldn't have really made much difference. The room was only cleaned three times whilst we were there which we feel is very poor and in the brochure it claimed there was maid service daily. Although we were all inclusive we did find it useful having a fridge in the room as we could keep our water bottles cool however although there is a kettle there is not tea/coffee in the room which was disappointing on days we had early trips booked as the restaurant does not open til 8am so we were heading out with not even a coffee inside us.
The restaurant is what it is really, its a 3 star hotel so a la carte dining is not to be expected. The food was ok, we had breakfast which comprised of a hot selection, pastries, fruit, cheese and the usual things but there wasn't a facility for fresh cooked omelettes or eggs but really that is fine and the Spanish omelette offered some mornings was nice. Lunch we only had on the last day as we were out all day on the other days but it was ok, salad, cheese, meats, perfect for a basic lunch. Dinner was themed each night, not great but edible however the restaurant staff were very rude to us, probably because they didnt see us round the pool every day as they seemed very friendly towards other people who they seemed to know better, we were only offered a drink at dinner twice throughout our stay.
Overall it wasnt our kind of place but the holiday was enjoyable and the island is lovely. Hotel is ok as a base but if I were staying here with the intention of using the facilities fully and staying on site to relax I would have been very disappointed.
