The castle is well worth spending some time in, if only to enjoy the great view from the castle walls. The museum and the artefacts in it are interesting and show the long history of this site.
The exhibition of inscribed stones showing ancient board games was fascinating.

This ancient castle lies on the slope of a hill that rises on the right bank of the river of San Marcos, near its confluence with the Guadiana, opposite the Spanish fortress of San Lucar, which is located on the left bank of the river. Its walls surround the village.
This site has military remains dating back to the 10th Century a.c. (With Phoenician settlement, Greek, Roman and Moorish). Taken from the Moors by D. Sancho II in 1240, it is the intersection of military buildings from different eras. The medieval castle and a modern fortification. Both are of irregular plan. The modern construction is composed of multiple batteries and a bastion facing the river.

We spent one lovely day in alcoutim ! Peaceful and quiet place along the river Guardiana. .the village is a typical one : white houses, small and narrow streets. .We also spent a few moments on the river beach. .refreshing. .

River Guadiana is in the Eastern border and there is a small village called Alcoutim. Beautiful city to stop for it's history (visit the castle) or eat well.
River there is very narrow and can see clearly the Spanish village on the other side of the river.
You can hire a canoe or a rowing boat there to see more.

Alcoutim itself is a very pretty and typically Portuguese town. Having said that, just a minute water taxi ride and you find yourself in the even smaller Spanish town of San Lucar do Guardiana, which has a castle of its own.....
A visit to the castle in Alcoutim gives a real insight into life centuries ago when the two countries were at war and shooting cannon balls at each other.

Loved this castle, the museum everything!
The "village" is very peaceful.
The museum is very easy to understand ... my favorite part was the medieval board games section!
