Lovely location in Porto Moniz - hotel is in the North part of the island so was great, not too hot, and very shaded in the region due to rainforest inland. Service was great and breakfast super. Gym was excellent.
Would recommend "Mar a Vista" restaurant (homemade Tomato soup so tasty, and Seafood rice dishes were wonderful on the outside balcony), plus natural pools
Recommend also walking the Levadas as a 4-5 hour activity (25 Fontes was busy but great with a nice cafe and shuttle service if you need to cutoff an hour from the walk; and the "Levada da Ribeira da Janela" nearby in Santa we also did personally and was lovely, combined with ice cream at the onda azul supermarket after near the roundabout which has seating outside), as well as walking around the lanes in town and resting at various breezy squares.
The sandy beach in Calheta and restaurant "Leme" were excellent, so we did repeat visits, including dolphin watching there also (magical).
Best to hire a car...Avis in Funchal excellent (get a separate annual car hire excess policy in advance). Taxis, and local buses excellent, but buses need cash.
Outside Funchal, super markets are pretty small, so plan on eating out given the good prices, fresh seafood, and friendly service.
