We had a very enjoyable paddle on a nice stretch of river. There was a friendly welcome and informal but clear instruction. One source of frustration was that we were ready to be instructed at 12.45 but did not get onto the water until 1.30 which lost us 30 mins out of a 3 hr session. We should not have had to wait for latecomers and the instruction could have been much more brisk and efficient. We just wanted to get on the water!

My son and I did a 2 day canoe trip from Hoarwithy to Symonds Yat.
It was easy to book and the company answered my email and phone questions.
All went very smoothly and we had a great time. The pick-up and drop off all went well with no hitches. Staff friendly and organised.
Only quibble was that the first day from Hoarwithy to Ross-On-Wye was a little short in terms of paddling time for two fairly fit people - took us about 3 hours. But the second day was a good paddle.
The Wye is beautiful and so calming.

This review is based on the full day, Ross-on-Wye to Symonds Yat canoe trip.

I recommend taking the full day trip over the 3/4 day trip that launches from Kerne Bridge: you'll be blessed with more time on the water, fewer other craft on the river for the first couple of hours (until you meet craft launching at Kerne) and a beautiful stretch of the Wye. This upper section has more "beaches" for a stop than below Kerne and in our experience a greater variety of wildlife, e.g. kingfishers, that the greater number of craft downstream scare off.

At time of writing, all day parking close to the launch site in Ross was £1. There's a public toilet (not mentioned in the briefing material) at the Ross launch site for 20p cash entrance.

We really enjoyed our experience with Wye Canoes/Adventure and thought it was excellent value for money, thank you to everyone who briefed us, equipped us and drove us back at the end.

Here's a bit more about our experience: we arrived 15 minutes before the 9am briefing as instructed, and completed the final paperwork and kit issue (from a well stocked van) before a safety and route briefing from Wye Adventures staff. This covered all of the basics, but pay attention and ask questions if this is your first time in a canoe. Also read everything on the website and briefing notes beforehand (common sense, I know, but...)

If it's not clear, this is an UNACCOMPANIED adventure. Wye staff are on hand for emergencies, but you are expected to self recover should you capsize and get yourself to the final landing point by the 4pm finish time. You have PLENTY of time to navigate the river, stop for photo/comfort breaks, lunch, etc. There are timing guides in the instructions and we found ourselves slowing down and even drifting on the river so as to maximise our time and enjoyment of the water. You can set your own pace, it isn't a race.

We experienced the river in quite exceptionally low water conditions so there were a lot of shallows and perhaps more bed rocks exposed or close to the surface - your own experience may differ depending on the recent weather and amount of water flowing into the Wye Valley. None of it was a problem to navigate, but if you're in the front keep a keen eye on the route ahead and between you anticipate where to b

Our group quickly found their own pace - those who launched first racing off. As noted at the top, this first stretch of river was a particular delight for being quieter (fewer craft, fewer excited shouts) and we saw three kingfishers as well as leaping salmon.

Being a salmon river, expect fishermen and be prepared to navigate away from lines in the water (some fishermen are more agreeable than others and forgiving of daytrippers)

Lovely relaxed time for a first timer and pit at ease by the team. Be sure to leave enough time to arrive.
