Being central to the community, it was an important location for the citizens to be assired that it is well card for. Whe we visited on a Thursday afternoon there were several worshipers, quietly expressing their faith. The beauty of this church was subtle and enhanced the experience, not overpowering as I have experienced in other houses of worship.

A bit more ornate that the average Protestant church. Contains a beautiful organ. Certainly worth visiting while in Esslingen.

This 13th century Gothic church is the oldest church in Esslingen and is the backdrop for the main square where the Christmas Market was being staged. Its twin towers are connected by what appeared to be an enclosed walkway (highly unusual) while the huge Gothic stained glass windows add to its appeal. Definitely worth a quick look when in town.

If you are into spiritual places and/or church architecture – pay a visit inside the cathedral. Beautiful medieval architecture. You will enjoy it from outside for sure: the cathedral is well-visible from the main road from the train station to the city center.

We arrived at Esslingen mid afternoon to discover the wine museum was closed that day. We therefore decided to explore, and were so pleased we did. Beyond the railway station and shopping precinct we saw a medieval tower at the end of the street and decided to head towards it to see what it was: the vista opened up to what was the old town square with traditional buildings, a river fork with more original buildings and including a fab delicatessen with little windows overlooking the river on either side. We walked a little further saw a square with a traditional German town hall clock with moving characters and waited for it to chime - big smiles!

The door to St Dionys was open and I am so glad we entered as the church is a feast for the eyes and made my holiday. It was just non-stop artwork, sculpture and architecture; the stained glass and alter were truly amazing and in good condition.

A must visit if in Stuttgart, as only 5-10 minutes by train from the Hauptbahnhoff.
