Take a decent jacket and be prepared for an excellent 80 odd minutes. Decent parking and facilities, make good use of the toilets before going in as there is lots of running water. The cafe and shop are modern and reasonably priced and the trip is a good value for what you get (Well this is Yorkshire!). There are warnings about going down the cave but even the 97 steps were not steep and had sections of concrete between the climbs. There are benches for those that feel they cannot go on but the Battlefield Cavern is well worth the effort. The guide we had was very good and informative and did his best in the naturally cramped conditions.

I visited the caves in April 2009, and although the caves themselves were fantastic, the tour was very disappointing. There were far too many people in the tour group, and the guide stayed at the front of the group, so if you're at the back, like I was, you couldn't hear anything. The group was rushed through the caves, and myself and a few other people, kept on falling behind. On a number of occassions the stragglers met large tours on the way back through, and were told off by other tour guides for falling behind.

The tour was so fast, I could not appreciate the beautiful caves which I had paid to go and see.

Thank you for your review. We ask visitors to keep up with their group for two main reasons. It makes it easier to hear the guide, and enables the guide to ensure that everyone is made aware of natural obstacles along the route. The tour duration is usually between eighty and ninety minutes. We appreciate that some visitors would like more time in the cave, but anything longer would be too much for others.

When we tried to go (twice) caves were closed because of high water levels (fair enough - it was a wet week). Not complaining about that, but the staff there were AWFUL. Having missed out the first time we phoned in advance, were told to come and then when we got there half an hour later the caves were closed for at least the next three hours (and there's really nothing to do while you wait). On complaining the staff weren't really able to say much and then one of them wandered past moaning loudly about 'people who couldn't read'. So, caves may be lovely, but I'd never go anywhere near them again. Check they're open foirst and then cross your fingers. Nearby Ingleton caves were great.

Thank you for your review. We do our best to avoid disappointing visitors, but the cave is part of a natural system and sometimes water levels do not come down as fast as we would like. Information about conditions in the cave is posted on our website when necessary.

These caves are just fantastic. The guide we had was very good at explaining everything and pointing out all the weird little things that nature has created such as the stalagmite 'judges head' which has to been seen to be believed and the battlefield cavern at the end is worth the huffing and puffing up the 97 steps, also the waterfalls are beautiful! You are provided with hard hats which is a good job as the sound of plastic hitting rock followed by a not at all necessay 'ouch' will be with you the whole way round - it doesnt hurt at all and is all part of the fun and experience :) You should definately wear good shoes/boots/trainers as you walk along a metal grid so you can see the steam beneath you and a jumper or something as it can be a bit cool in there. There are a couple of low sections to take into account when visiting plus the aptly named 'squeeze' where you take a deep breath to get through - also the steps are a bit of a killer but lead up to the cavern which is unmissable (once you've got your breath back of course) when the guide turns the lights off in the cavern its a sight you could never get bored off but i wont ruin the suprise - go see it yourself!! we are going back there again this September and i cannot wait to see it all again and take some pictures!!!

A fantastic place to visit and take your kids. Its a huge great long cave with one or two tight squeezes (for me anyway) and a lot of low roofs. The big chamber/ cavern at the end of the walk is a bit special; well worth the walk! I came here before with my children (about 5 years ago I think) and I have to say that their level of customer service has improved!! Rob M.
