We tried to visit here, but had to make do with a view from the outside.

Unbeknownst to me, they're shut for all of January & February. We had a nice stroll up and around, but not in!

Fantastic fortified village about a 20 minute drive from boulogne. Came here again with family and friends. If you are in boulougne sur mer then get this on your list to visit. 5€ entrance into the Citadel and grounds. This is an example of fantastic history.

I love fortified towns. This one has a lot of interesting history, which we wouldn't have picked up had we not taken the audio guide. The audio guide itself does go on a bit in places and there are long periods of just music which was a bit irritating, but if you persevere you will learn a lot.

Of particular interest to me was how the British Army set up an HQ here during the First World War. And also why the town is called Montreuil-sur-mer when the sea is so far away!

The map we were given to follow was a bit confusing, but we muddled through.

Montreuil-sur-Mer used to host the General Headquarters of the British Empire army from 1916 to 1919. An exhibition provides a full overview of this engagement in this historical site. A lot to learn.
The ramparts give fascinating views of the surrounding area.
2 hours are necessary to apprecaite the richness of the citadelle.

The walls of the citadel provide extensive views of the surrounding landscape and big skies, especially glorious at sunset.

Here you can see bats and swallows flying low over the walls, especially near the citadel. There is also a walk through one of the lookout posts to the depths of the valley and onto a nearby road.
