The walls of the citadel provide extensive views of the surrounding landscape and big skies, especially glorious at sunset.

Here you can see bats and swallows flying low over the walls, especially near the citadel. There is also a walk through one of the lookout posts to the depths of the valley and onto a nearby road.

Excellent historic site and exhibitions. Staff wonderful. First world war memorial fascinating. History of second world war sadly being airbrushed from history by the French state.

Quite a lot to see here and a ticket covers two other museums as well. Some dodgy steps to get to the top of some of the towers but would expect this in such an old building.

We spent a good two hours visiting the Citadelle and thoroughly enjoyed the very informative commentary and the music on the free audio-guide. The exhibition about the bats was interesting but only in French. The First World War rooms provided excellent displays in French and English with clear texts and photos although the lighting had stopped working in one area. We would highly recommend visiting the Citadelle.

We paid €5 each to visit La Citadelle and this represents excellent value for money. We spent around 2 hours looking around what remains of the original fortifications but it would certainly be worthy of a longer visit, occupying a whole morning or afternoon (for those planning a visit you should be aware that La Citadelle, in common with most places in Montreuil, closes for lunch between 12pm and 2pm).

The entry fee includes the loan of a guidebook (in French, English and Dutch) which we found helpful and informative and certainly enhanced our visit. We were also offered audio guides free of charge which is a nice touch even though our choice was to decline the offer.

There is enough that has been preserved or sympathetically restored to be of interest to any history buff of any age.
