Thea beach is clean and large, but if you want to enter the sea it is full of seaweed and sea urchins, mostly at low tide. Special shoes is a must if you want to enter water at low tide.

We thoroughly enjoyed staying at the Zanzibar retreat hotel. Salome and Jan are great hosts. The rooms were nice and clean, the staff was friendly, food was delicious, and on top of it all, my youngest had her 7th birthday here. The entire staff sang and danced for her, and made her birthday one she will remember for the rest of her life.

My teenagers really relaxed in the pool and the beach.

We also enjoyed the snorkelling trip to Mnemba Atoll. A great experience.

I would definitely recommend the hotel for having a quiet - relaxed time, and winding down. Hard to get back to work after such a relaxing 4 days!

This is a great place! Basically all of Zanzibar has questionable beaches because of the tides. Some have powdery beaches some of the time and the tide comes in and wipes them away the rest so there is nothing....or some like Matamwe have good beaches part of the time and then the tide goes out and there is the tidal pools. I can't give it a 5 or 4 star because I have been to great beaches around the world, sorry.

This is a fun place to go. I stayed in a great place with bungalows on the beach, an Asilia property that had a great little cove. That made this a perfect location. The thing that is great about Matamwe is that it is right across from Membe island, which has great snorkeling. I mean world class. There is also a disappearing sandbar because of the huge tides. My hotel set me up on the sandbar with a table and umbrella and champagne lunch. Sweet! You can also go sailing on their local, authentic dhaws or go on the reef at low tide with the locals and look for starfish and sea cucumbers.
Some of the other places are more built up with jet skis. It is all a matter of what you are looking for. This has a long bumpy road to get to the resort (at least my resort). You do feel like you are away from it all and quite spoiled. Not the place to go if you want loud music and a lot of noise (although I think there is one resort like that).

Goes for Miles! Surf shoes recommended if tide is out to reach the reef. Approached by many locals but Akuna Matata and enjoy
