Lovely drive around this roughtly 16 mile park. Do watch the short movie in the Visitor Center it helps put everything in perspective. Glad they have small pull over areas though out the drive as many cars wanedt to travel at a faster pace than I. Four options exist to enhanced your tour, map, cell phone, purchased CD and use of a tour guide who rides with you in your vehicle for price. I attempted to use the cell phone choice but never found the signs with the phone number to call at the main stops. The map has a short synopise and I was able to find scan codes at some sites that pulled up YouTube videos. Plus to hire a tour guide would be more indepth explanation, downside would be it does not allow lots of exploring time. My favorite part of the park is the USS Cairo Memorial, do not by pass this area of the park!

Vicksburg was a great day visit. The museum was smaller than expected but the movie was very informational. The park drive was nice with stops along the way. You could purchase a CD or call in on your cell phone to hear the history as you go. Bathrooms at visitor center and Cairo stop.

Cons: the upkeep was a concern. The grass around the grave sites were almost as tall as the headstones. A portion of the road was closed due to rain washout still since last year. Some of the monuments and signage needs a little TLC because they are becoming hard to read.

Spent about 3 hours touring the Vicksburg Military Park, and could probably have used another hour or two to do it right. Part of the loop drive through the park was closed, which meant we had to double back to pick up one whole section -- and the delay meant we had to miss the Cairo Museum. Plan to spend most of a day at the Park, if you want to see the complete layout of the Union and Confederate lines during the 47 day siege of Vicksburg.

As a whole, the park is a sobering experience, as it displays how intense the fighting was and how close together the battle lines were during the siege. Be sure to watch the film in the welcome center before beginning the tour, and also ask the Park staff if any of the route is closed.

Gives good insight into the many reasons why various battles were fought during the Civil War. Excellent examples of trenches used in the war as well as an idea of the enormity of the loss of human life.

Our family of 4 took a detour here on our trip to New Orleans. This is quite an out of the way detour. As I have a great deal of interest in the Civil War, particularly at the Vicksburg battle, this was a must see for me.

The visit starts with a orientation movie, this is great. It explained the strategic importance of this battle. The overall strategy of the battle, and how it played out. We booked a private tour. Our tour guide Joe was a former Vicksburg mayor. This actually gives the tour a balanced perspective. My experience with all the civil war battlefields are the the perspective is overwhelmingly US/North oriented. It kinds of makes sense, history is written by the winner, and these are US national parks. For anyone who wants a bit more of a balanced perspective, I think a private tour will do that. On the other hand, a private tour at Vicksburg may be underwhelming if that’s not what you are looking for. Gettysburg tour may feel completely different.

We finished the private tour and came back and drive around once more to linger and take pictures. The Illinois memorial is beautiful, made out of marble and the eagle is real gold. The architecture is like the Pantheon in Rome. The USS Cairo is also a good visit, you can walk onto the Ironclad. I think one can really appreciate the difficulty of the campaign when looking at the terrain. The unfortunate thing is that there is a lot of trees grown on the battlefield that you can’t really see the overall terrain. And as some reviewer has commented, you can’t see the city of Vicksburg either. On the other hand, the NPS has cut some of the trees recently so we can see the trenches. The displaying of blue (union) placard and red (confederate) showing position of the army was a very good.

For a view of the Mississippi review, I recommend going south along Washington Street, to Navy circle. It is right next to the Mississippi welcome center. There is a view of the the 2 bridges across the river.
