Great location away from Thames St but not too far. This room is on the street and the noisiest of almost any we've stayed. Foot traffic on the street, door at the front of the inn right outside of the room, breakfast made right outside of the room. Exceptionally noisy against extremely high priced on a holiday weekend. Mentioning it to the innkeeper with a response of "it's because you booked online." Close that room so no one ever stays there.

Situated very close to the lively wharfs, marina and Thames street which is full of boutiques, restaurants and cafes, yet far enough where it is quiet, you can't really beat the location of the Clarkeston. The rooms were clean and had a lot of old charm. The breakfast included was fine - nothing to write home about, but we had enough to keep us satiated for the day and that was what we were looking for.

We had a very strange and offputting interaction with the chef for our 1st breakfast, whereby our group of 3 didn't notice a very small, handwritten reserved sign on the only table that was set up to accommodate 3 people. When she saw we had put our things down to sit there, the chef rudely pointed out the reserved sign and told us we couldn't sit there. When we asked where we should sit, she told us "to go across the street" to eat and that "she is small potatoes" when it comes to accommodating parties of our size. This was a pretty outrageous and unnecessary response, considering we were paying customers STAYING AT THAT INN. We then set our own places at a table for 2 and quietly ate our breakfast there. I'm not sure why the party that ended up sitting at the reserved table were so much more important than us or who they were, but it shouldn't matter as all guests should be treated with respect. Meanwhile, they didn't even arrive or order breakfast until more than an hour after we left. Perhaps this was a one-off experience based on the other wonderful reviews I read about the Clarkeston and its staff, but I do quite a bit of travel around the world and haven't encountered anything like this before.

I do want to point out that the young lady who served us was absolutely lovely and professional - apparently the chef's granddaughter. She was the only saving grace from that experience.

The wifi connection was terrible, though we didn't complain about it as we were only there for 2 nights and spent most of our time outside of the hotel.

All in all, the price and location were right considering we booked about 2 weeks ahead of Labor Day Weekend, but given more time to prepare, I'm not sure I'd stay here again.

This review is from my past stay several years ago. We loved it so much, we planned a 2nd trip this past July. This trip was unfortunately aborted when we were almost there because my traveling companion's brother died suddenly, and we had to turn around and go home. I cannot express how much the innkeeper's compassion, and understanding meant at that moment. He was the best of humanity, and I am was so thankful and touched. Can't wait to come back again.

Highly recommend the Clarkeston B & B in Newport !!! Excellent location, less than 5 minute walk to the wharf, private parking. Home cooked breakfast, friendly staff, choice of rooms upon arrival. Rooms have warm feeling and well decorated. Owner, Rick, is on site to make sure your stay is the best it can be. Would definitely return to this B & B or one of their other 5 locations. Website is Inns of Newport.

Consistently pleasing ... everything, including the room and amenities in this lovely B&B, was wonderful, spacious, classy, and absolutely convenient to everything FUN and delicious in Newport RI. Included in our "Doris Duke" king room was a small wall-mounted TV, ample outlets, warmth or A/C, and critical free WiFi. The bathroom was clean, plus the two-person :-) shower/water pressure was better than any other. Free breakfast made-to-order, from a nice menu, started our day off right. Then, due to 1-block proximity to center of downtown, all shopping, restaurants and entertainment was only a minute walk away, even though parking (for 5-minute drives to the beaches, etc) was plentiful and convenient.

Now, for what separates the from the others: Hospitality ... tremendous, from walk-in to drive away ... with on-site owner Rick's always "do anything for your" presence ... to his staff (at breakfast and beyond) attentiveness and politeness re-defining the concept of pure kindness. I would easily recommend this and other Inns of Newport, all family owned, simply because it makes vacations and events both memorable and beautiful.

Room Tip: Select a B&B walking distance to everything ... what a smart move!!!!!
