If you want a hotel that is located near the Temple area this place is your best bet. Rooms are big with two bedrooms with three beds. The underground parking can be tricky in entering and leaving. There are not many spaces available. Book early. Breakfast is free but if you want eggs etc then you order from the menu. Prices are very reasonable. This hotel is also a reasonable priced for it's location. If you are looking for luxury then this may not be your place.

Room Tip: Good Location Near Temple Area

It is easy to see the generations of Carlton charm, from the original 1920s through its 20th century remodels. The rooms are big enough for sleeping, relaxing, and work. Friendly and knowledgeable staff, from the airport shuttle driver, to the lobby personnel, to the building staff. The amenities range from late 1990s to more modern conveniences. The included cooked-to-order breakfast is an added bonus. Recommended for business, singles, couples, researchers, and downtown Salt Lake City tourists.

Room Tip: Close to Salt Lake City downtown shopping, businesses, and tourism.

I have been staying at Carlton Hotel for several years, each year several times, for 2 nights at a time, and it's a home away from home. I've always enjoyed the friendly service and the well maintained historic rooms, many are large and some of them suites. The rooms are clean and well kept. The breakfast to order is a special treat that you won't find anywhere else. The location of Carlton can't be beat - 5 minutes walking distance to the Temple area, 5 minutes to the brand new mall and close to the Capitol. In the middle of downtown and quiet, the best you can get at a still affordable rate. I always recommend this hotel to others!

Room Tip: Wonderful, spacious suites with kitchens!

I am hesitant to even publish this review because I really like the people who own and operate this hotel. I have stayed there multiple times over the past several years. I always return because of the friendly employees, awesome Temple Square/City Creek Center location, free local shuttle, and affordable rates. The hotel was never fancy. The decor is dated, but it was always clean, until now. My first suite was filthy and had a foul odor. We asked to be moved and ended up with a 2nd suite that was only slightly cleaner. The blinds and windows are filthy. An employee gave us 2 explanations for the condition: (1) A housekeeper recently quit and (2) There is construction next door. I don't buy either of these. Those blinds could not be that dirty if a housekeeper just quit, unless she had never cleaned them. Also, we were on the opposite side of the construction. I think it's possible that some dust could have found it's way into the room, but not to this extent. I am adding photos to show the condition of the room. I think something has changed with the way the owners are running the hotel and because of that I will never stay there again. I am only posting because I have left some good reviews in the past and I would hate for someone to take my prior advise and stay in this establishment considering it's current condition. I will say that upon check out I asked if they would discount the room price due to the condition and he did begrudgingly take off $10/night.

Room Tip: Select a different hotel

The Carlton is rather ancient. Rooms are worn, but clean. Hosts very pleasant. Weekly price can't be beat. Free shuttle. No iron or hairdryer in room, but I think you can request them from desk. The property next door is also owned by the hotel. It is terribly run down and seems to serve as some sort of halfway house. With that said, all tenants that I met during my stay--many of whom came down for the excellent, hot, cheap (free with some rooms) breakfast--were friendly. With a little $ invested, the Carlton could be a top-rate boutique hotel.
