Loved visiting the iron works when we stopped by the Civil War museum next door ( lots of construction right now as they build out the new visitor center). Parking was free but looks like it is normally $5. Great background on the ironworks history and role in the Civil Way. The water wheel is very interesting. You can walk across the street to the James River and walk the pedestrian bridge. Two thumbs up for the Iron Works.

Be sure to watch the video. It gives a great history of Tredegar. Unfortunately none of the inside exhibits are Iron Works related but there are some rusty things outside to look at. My husband enjoyed seeing the water wheel and finding where some of the line shafts exited the building. There is no admission charge.

Great place to discover civil war history with no charge to visitors. If you want to see more then right next door is a fee based self guided exhibit with greater detail.

The NPS side is free but the new side will be a fee area. The Richmond Battlefield parks are a great attraction and totally free. Well displayed artifacts tell the story of Richmond during the civil war.

The museum is in two buildings and building an addition on the grounds of the factory. this was an "over the top mill race" working factory to powering the production. many differ thing to see that were part of the iron works.
