Mitko Manolev Winery
Ranked #10 of 12 Restaurants in Melnik
Restaurant details

Mitko Manolev has a small cellar uphill from the main street in upper Melnik, where he serves his own wines and his opinions about wines and winemaking. I tasted three wines (one semi-sweet white) and two reds from the local Melnik grape, and my tasting fee was waived when I bought a bottle of red. A nice place to while away a few minutes or an hour chatting with Mitko, who warms up as you get to know him (in fact, after visiting his cellar, I met him, his family, and several friends later in the evening to share drinks at a local restaurant).

It is a small celar, run by the owner himself. He told us a lot of stuff about how he makes and stores the wine, and he offered us a glass of it. You can either sit inside the cellar, in a traditional table next to the barrels, or even outside of the cave, admiring the beautifull view.

This little cave cellar is located up the hill behind the main street. The owner can be a little surly but once you sit down order some tasting and a cheese plate it all becomes fun.
Some of the wines are ok, some are terrible but hey that is the fun! The owner relaxed once we just sat down and ordered a few things and it was good fun.
You can either sit in the cave cellar or outdoors overlooking the town

Fair uphill hike to the cellar but worth the experience. We took the back road down for a different experience.
The cave is unique complete with its own "bat" that provided some entertainment. The wines are made here using nature methods and will not be to the likeing of everyone. At 2 Lev a glass for 4 types of wine it is not too expensive. Again a unique experience in my mind.

This place was so authentic, we found the proprietor friendly and welcoming. We chatted to him when we were tasting our wine and he was enthusiastic about his products. We bought a bottle of the melnik red which my girlfriend said was the best red wine she has ever drunk. Definitely a highlight
