This is one of the gems of the UW campus - tours are comprehensive and viewings are extremely interesting.
The building has been preserved well, and WO's reading room has a wide collection of theses from the UW Honors Program.
I would highly recommend visiting here during the evening instead of visiting some of the more "tourist-y" and crowded locations like Memorial Union and State Street (which are both fantastic to see during the daytime but incredibly loud and busy at night).
The Washburn Observatory is located on top of the hill on Observatory Drive in the University of Wisconsin. It is still housing a telescope to see the far view and the sky. If you want to see the sky via the telescope, check the dates and time. Otherwise, it is a nice building to see while walking along the road to see many things in the University.
We took teen girls to check out some cool views, great experience. We got to see Jupiter's Stars, Saturn and the moon. They provided a lot of history and answered questions. Historical and hands on.
We went on a tour this spring. Every Wednesday night in the summer after 10 pm, the public can go look through the telescope. Star gazing at its best!
A chance to see the heavens with a knowledgable guide. Check listings for when it is open and head that direction if the sky is clear!
We didn't go inside but the building is neat and the view from the top of the hill is awesome. It is a cute area and worth a walk around to check out the scenery. There are some parking spots right in front of the hill.
