Sorry bout it, but I'm not on trend here. First impression, I was asked if my whole party was there, I had a reservation for 2. We were standing arm in arm at the check in as I said "we have a reservation at 8 for 2". If you bother to look up from the screen at your patrons and make eye contact, you'd have seen the silly pretentiousness of the question. The outdoor seating is lovely and they are adhering to guidelines, but you're only one sneeze away from Corona since the tables are close together. They are certainly depending on those little plastic barriers to keep things separate. Again, these are minimum standards, and yes I do have a degree in epidemiology, but this is all over NYC not just here.
I was looking forward to the food, but I was not amazed. The kale and Brussels sprout salad sounded delicious but lacked salt, acid and texture. The steak was woefully under seasoned and the prosciutto and burrata charcuterie plate was, well a meat and cheese plate, good but nothing special. The papardelle with crab was very good and the only thing I can really say I enjoyed. The Calabrian chili added a flavor and heat that was simultaneously subtle and pronounced.
The service was adequate, and our waitress checked on us and was accommodating, but isn't that a minimum standard? What was off putting was the frenetic pace of the host and other waitstaff. There seemed to be an urgency of purpose in a restaurant that was not full. This mad dash to greet, seat and eat without attention to the overall dining experience is part and parcel of today's paradigm. Let's make a lovely space, have fancifully described ingredients and dishes, call it something trendy and act like if Di Niro, DiCaprio and Denzel are waiting for the table I'm currently occupying. Yes, you're doing me a favor by letting me eat here. I will not burden you again.
I don't think 3 stars is a bad review, it's fair. This restaurant could be great with some refinements, however, based on the good reviews they're getting and how quickly the restaurant did fill up later on in the evening, I'll bet they won't change a thing. This review will be buried and considered an anomaly by all the regulars.
