Owner description: Smith Memorial Playground & Playhouse opened its doors in East Fairmount Park in 1899. Funded by Richard and Sarah Smith, the site was dedicated to the memory of their adult son, Stanfield. Smith’s beautiful, 24,000 square foot Playhouse was designed solely as a play space for children by one of Philadelphia’s most prominent late 19th century architects, James H. Windrim. The Playground is situated on its original historic landscape – 6 1/2 acres of open fields, wooded terrain, and sloped hills – and is home to the century old Ann Newman Giant Wooden Slide, a treasured play experience for generations of Philadelphia’s children, as well as other unique pieces of play equipment.Smith’s mission is to provide children 10 and under from diverse backgrounds with free and accessible one-of-a-kind play experiences that meet their physical, behavioral, and developmental needs.

Wow, what a great playground! So much for the kids to do and it kept their attention for almost 3 hours (ages 3 and 5). The outside is by far the best including all your playground favorites and a giant wooden slide that my kids went on over and over and over and... Inside the mansion was OK, but maybe best for the youngest kids only. My 5 year old was bored in less than 10 minutes and we went back outside.

Took my toddler daughter to this place. It is beautiful and very great attraction for kids her age. We spent a lot of time outside and when became too hot we had great time inside.

A lot of activities for children under 7 but limited for those over 7. The large wooden slide was the best part of the park. The mansion was disappointing because it was for children under 5 for the most part.

This playground is adequate fun for kids 8 and under. My 10 year old was bored. The wooden slide is awesome. The play place has 3 floors. Different things on each level. You can go inside and stay cool on the really hot days. After about an hour though my little ones were ready to leave.

We are members of Smith, and love the playground areas. There is a ton of space and lots for the kids to do. Zero complaints in that department. The inside, especially the bathroom situation, needs work. There are 2 single stall bathrooms on the first floor inside the mansion. And there are 2 sets of bathrooms downstairs that are accessible from the outside only. The one that is accessible from the outside is extremely in need of a renovation. It is dark and dingy with peeling paint and very bad lighting. My son actually found it scary. The separate bathrooms do not have sinks, and there are a set of communal sinks located down a hall when you leave the bathroom. The bathrooms in the mansion are better, however there simply isn't enough for the amount of people that visit the museum. Also, be warned, there is no AC. If you go here on a very hot day, the inside of the museum is unbearable.
