I stayed here for several nights in February, 2016. It was my third stay at the hotel, which has become my preferred stop for events at nearby SOMArts Cultural Center. The hotel is clean and relatively secure in a sketchy neighborhood. The staff is generally pleasant and makes an effort to accommodate requests. The beds, sheets, and carpets are a bit worn, but I don't mind that in tradeoff for an affordable price. The hotel is a non-smoking hotel, but every time I've stayed here, there has been a very strong cloud of pot smoke in the front area of the building, in and around the main stairwell near the manager's residence. This can and does penetrate adjacent rooms. If pot smoke bothers you, request a room away from the street. Given the city noise level, that's a good idea anyway. This is also a wooden structure that creaks a lot, so being on the top floor will make your stay better as well. Parking is free and semi-secure. There is a continental breakfast that won't win any awards (a few cereals, fruit, coffee, and some packaged pastries akin to vending machine fodder), but it's still something I appreciated. Despite the fact that San Francisco is a leader in greener practices, those have not made it to the San Francisco Inn, which uses plastics and styrofoam in the usual areas and even though the facility has the city-required lineup of waste bins for recycling, I've watched the staff dump everything into the landfill container and make no effort to recycle, even when I pre-sorted it for them. Note that the water is very soft, so you might want to bring a bath brush and a shampoo for soft water. I've stayed in several places in the area, and this is where I will stay in the future. If you don't need to stay in the SOMA area, there are much nicer places for less in the suburbs, but if you need to stay in this area of downtown, there is no better place in the sub $150/night range.More
