We stayed in Volcano, and there are not many good dining choices. Ohelo Cafe was rated highly, so we stopped in for lunch and had the shrimp scampi and baby back ribs (lunch menu is small). Both were good - I have definitely had better ribs but these were just fine. French fries were very good. Partner had the scampi and it was excellent. Prices kind of high, but we have not eaten out mich on the big island.

Aloha Cheryl.
We definitely live in a sometimes rainy area (20 inches in a month). We are glad you enjoyed your meal and we will be expanding our lunch menu now that the park has reopened. If you're back our way again, we hope to see you.

We stopped here looking for something less busy and pricey than can be found in the nearby park, and we weren't disappointed! We were served promptly and all staff were polite and helpful throughout our meal. The Pesto Pizza (containing Basil Macadamia Nut Pesto) was delicious and light.

When staying in the Volcano area, there are not a lot of good dining choices but this one is really good. Friendly people, reasonable prices and excellent food. We will definitely go back when we're visiting Volcano again.

I was told upon checking in at the property where I was staying in Volcano that this place needs a reservation. So I did make one. And when I arrived, I was asked immediately if I had one. We were seated immediately. Then it was a let down. Very limited entrees. There were five. Well, at 7 pm they were already out of mahi-mahi and shrimp. So they only had three entrees. And pizza. Didn't think I needed to make reservations at a restaurant to have pizza.
Adding to this poor dinner was dessert. They only offer "napolean".
It had to be the most disappointing dessert one eats after a disappointing meal.
Service was good. Skip this place unless you are looking forward to pizza as a meal.

Aloha Walnut123 ,
We at ohelo apologize for your disastrous experience. The Volcano National Park has been closed for several months. Business declined dramatically, we went from 23 employees to 9 and almost have to give it up. We have had many problem in ramping up ohelo to what it was, and what it should be. We shall be back to our previous standards any day now.
I know this does not help you or lessen our failure in serving you. When you return for another visit, please give me a call on my cell phone (808) 896-5404, we will be happy to host you and your party and serve you the meal that you deserved.

Visited in 2010, 2016 and again in 2018. The wood fired oven casts a delicious smell over the surrounding area and heralds good food to come. Non-pizza offerings are a bit limited but appeared tasty (and I was there for pizza anyway!). A glass of wine here is enormous. The special pizza this visit (sausage, garlic, pepperoncini, caper, feta) was a bit dry since there was no sauce (which surprised me) and with the crust being so thin/crispy as to be almost cracker-like was a bit disappointing. Would still return - would just get a pizza with sauce!
