I stayed three nights at Volcano House just as the restaurants reopened. If I was rating only breakfast I would give them 5 stars for the great buffet choices and attentive service. My coffee cup was never empty unless I turned down a refill. Loved the fruit choices and the omelets which I never eat normally.
I had dinner there one night, think it was the second night of service after the reopening. I had the pineapple wrapped fish and would say it was OK, not as good as the last dinner I had there. I’m sure the restaurant has some kinks to work out and they will get it done. There is no active lava in Kīlauea Crater, so the view at night is just dark. You might want to visit near sunset when there can be a spectacular sky.

Just enjoyed a wonderful breakfast buffet for $15 per person including drinks. Great service, superb fresh fruits, good coffee, and a nice selection of other buffet standards. All at correct temperature. Strongly recommend the Kalua pork in the omelet. And DO NOT MISS the heavenly waffles. As in plural. Bet you can't eat just one. And quite a view!

Volcano House is open to walk around. No guests currently and no food services. Bring your own water and food into Volcano National Park. Only place to get any refreshments is all the way at the end of Chain of Craters road near Holea Arch.

I'm going through some old photos BEFORE the eruption and found I hadn't reviewed this so am taking the time to do so now...

This was the 7th stop on our drive from Waikoloa to Kilauea caldera. We arrived earlier than our reservation so spent time outside in back taking in the view and taking photos. The kids played on the grass. Our group of 20 was eventually seated in the back, far from the windows. The servers did not love our kids, that's for sure. There was nothing for them to do so we had them watch videos of the volcano erupting and had them play outside in back. (I didn't love the video since I'm a little afraid of volcanos. I kept reminding myself that I trust science's ability to predict eruptions.)

Full day Itinerary (before eruption). Our group included kids 2-15 years old, adults and 74 year old grandparents: We planned a few stops during our drive from Waikoloa to the Kilauea caldera in Volcano National Park. Waipio Valley Lookout was first (photo op and bathroom, no hike), then Laupahoehoe Beach Park (photo op down near water and bathroom), Akaka Falls State Park ("hike" on cement trail to falls), lunch at Hilo Farmer's Market, then Volcano National Park. In Volcano National Park we visited the Kilauea Visitor Center and watched the educational film, Thurston Lava Tubes, ate at The Rim at Volcano House Hotel, stopped at Steaming Bluff Overlook (steam vent near the parking area then hike to 'rim'), then to Jaggar Museum to view volcano at/after sunset. Drove back via the nice, smooth, DARK, Daniel K Inouye highway that bisects the island.

We ate dinner here on the last day the park was open. One might expect that service and quality might not be so good when all the employees just found out the livelihood was about the change due to the closure of the park. We had a Casear salad which we split (good size to do so) and we both ordered the pineapple wrapped Ono (fish) - very good!
