Amazing food, clean environment and friendly staff. They have a consistency in delivering a good meal whenever I go, whether they are empty or flat out. I don't leave many reviews but this one was required. Well done!

Lil Pantry Café, 47A Garden Drive, Tullamarine, Vic 3043

We’d arrived at Tullamarine for 05.45 – tired, but pleased to be back; just a seven hours flight but, with the meal served late night and the three hours difference in time between start point and Melbourne, there was just too little time to capture any in-flight sleep. Tried, but failed. Given the time taken clearing airport formalities at Tullamarine and making our way through into the outside world, we were faced with the congestion that always clutters up the main highways into the city of an early morning.

Tullamarine Airport is to the north of the city, and we were heading south-east around Phillips Bay and there’s no easy way to skirt the CBD. It’s easier to take time out and enjoy breakfast at a convenient road stop, and leave travel until after 09.00 … and that’s just what we did. There was a shuttle bus standing outside the terminal – according to the woman on the phone – and we made it there in time, shoe-horning ourselves in with another family and their luggage. We’d seen the Lil Pantry café to one side of Garden Drive heading for the parking depot, and thought to check it out. Ten minutes later we were parking outside the place – lots of road space this early in the day.

The guy behind the counter was friendly and full of advice for the best kinds of breakfast breads, toasties, sandwiches and more that he could offer – and which were sitting ready in a hot cabinet behind glass. But, we’d had coffee in the terminal whilst chasing around to put some money on our cell phone – and failed on that one – but then found a pay phone and changed a note (we’d not had any coins, would you believe it).

The croissants looked good – large - and we ordered one and a couple of coffees: latte & cappuccino; couldn’t resist our second coffee of the hour. The woman serving behind the counter cut our croissant in half (and then sliced it open) and, when asked, provided a spoon or two of jam. We sat outside – in the shade initially (but that was too cold) and then shifted to the early morning sun. Our coffees followed us out.

Garden Drive at 08.00 is quiet with everything either still closed or just opening; we had a comfortable table in a pleasant wide avenue of two story commercial buildings – many with grass and trees outside. We’d been on the road for 18 weeks – since end May - and now we were back. The Lil Pantry may not have been the most salubrious of eating houses to celebrate >50,000 km travel, but it provided the venue, great coffee & eats and, importantly, the courtesy and services that you tend to take for granted when you live locally – and then come to appreciate more when you’ve been travelling. At A$11, it was good value too.
