Our family booked a table for 8 to have an early lunch. Despite it being a weekday, during our meal every table was occupied so a reservation is highly recommended. Our waiter took our drinks order, committing our choices to memory without the need for a pad and pencil. Main courses were burgers and Dover sole in a crab sauce from the specials board. There was a reasonable delay before the arrival of our meals. We felt the food was of an exceptionally high quality - the fish was served in a delicate but flavoursome crab sauce. Skinny fries and a bowl of steamed seasonal vegetables were accompaniments - everything served piping hot and cooked to perfection. The burgers were also of a very high standard - two of our party had sweet potato fries which were crispy and dry. As the restaurant filled, the busy staff worked hard to keep up with taking orders and serving, but there were longish intervals between plate clearing, desserts and payment. Another couple of staff would have helped.

We were very impressed with this restaurant and its location on a main route between Newport and Yarmouth would suggest that it would get lots of passing trade - I can only suggest that you call ahead if you want to eat based on our experience. In warmer weather there are plenty of benches outside to appreciate the views from the elevated position. There is some garden play equipment to amuse younger guests as well.

Called for lunch on the off-chance as we were on our way from Newport to Yarmouth. Ideally you should book as it is a very popular pub. We took the dog. They are allowed in specified areas and cater for their appetites with dog biscuits and water bowls!

The lunch menu was extensive with extras on a Specials board but we opted for their "smaller" meals. This description is questionable as no meal on the IOW can ever be classed as small ! It was busy and we had to wait a while for the food but when it arrived it was excellent.

This pub's reputation is well founded and we will call again.

We ate here on a very busy Easter Sunday evening. We were given a lovely table by the window and orders for drinks and food were taken at the table. It was nice surprise to see they were still offering a selection of roasts even at 6pm. We opted for a roast lamb, roast pork and a scampi. The food was excellent and was enjoyed by all. We decided to try the desserts but unfortunately after waiting with empty plates in front of us for over half an hour we abandoned the idea. There seemed to be a shortage of waiting staff to cope with the numbers, also at no point during our meal did anyone come over to see if everything was all right. After deciding to skip desserts we then had a problem to attract the attention of the young waiter to ask for the bill. In the end we paid at the bar. It’s a shame as the food was really good. Will revisit but on a quieter day.

They squeezed my sister and I in on a busy Good Friday evening. We both had the lamb rump which was perfect. A small waffle each was plenty big enough! The service was great. We chances our arm the following night and they kindly fitted us in between sittings. I had the lamb pie and sis had the risotto...again delicious! Couldn’t fault it, yes a bit noisy and busy but that’s due entirely to its success.

We found it impossible to book a table for Easter Saturday evening until this pub came up trumps and we were not disappointed. The blacksmith arms is the sister pub to the Pointer Inn. Both have the same varied menu. The food was excellent. We both had the shredded duck leg as a starter then a Bordeaux burger (daily special) as the main. The service was excellent as well. This pub is away from the main towns but is worth making the effort. I highly recommend it.
