The hotel has the most amazing beach on its doorstep.
But it's very ugly on the outside and slightly better but with a cold feel on the inside. Check in chaotic and all of the receptionists came across as unprofessional trainees. I was not made aware of all available facilities. The room was of an average size, basic cheap furnishings. No slippers, no robes, only a couple of hard thin towels that must have been washed 127 times too many. Small bathroom without a bidet. No complimentary water. You have to pay extra to hire a safe - that is if they can actually find the key (they didn't so we had to carry our valuables with us!).
The choice at the bar is limited and old fashioned (not in a good way). There was no dark rum, no sugar syrup but an overdose of lemon juice.
Very good breakfast with varied choice. Nice spacious grounds.

We enjoyed our stay here, but the hotel did not live up to the same standards as the Axis Vermar where we stayed in 2016.

The Axis Ofir has great views from its restaurant and the breakfast is pretty good.

However, compared to the Axis Vermar in nearby Povoa the outside pool and facilities are relatively poor (shallow, average size only and not heated at all), compared to the Axis Vermar which has a great large pool and nice surroundings.

The exterior of this hotel is a somewhat 1970s communist block in appearance and therefore not tremendously inviting. However, once through the front entrance, it becomes clear that efforts have been made to add some stye and give guests something more appealing to look at. The rooms are a little dull, both in terms of the colour palette (a sort of pale grey-green) and literally, in that the lighting leaves something to be desired (only one side of he double bed has a reading light, for example, which seems a tad ungenerous). But the rooms have what one generally requires otherwise (e.g. good air con.) and the bathrooms are clean, spacious and equipped with the usual hairdryers etc and have very good showers. Our only annoyance in terms of room facilities, or lack thereof, came from there not being an iron at our disposal. Guests cannot even borrow one from reception. Ones only option is to pay exorbitant prices to have individual items ironed by hotel staff and the wait time is 24 hours - so no hope for the person who simply wants to get up and put on a linen shirt (that doesn't look like it has been trampled by goats) then and there. This is an irritating example of 3 star service for 4 star prices and expectations, of which there were one or two others. Having said that, the hotel generally lived up to its four star rating.

We enjoyed a lovely week at the Axis Ofir and were happy with our experience there and with what the hotel had on offer. It is right on the beach and has its own pool (water quite cold, but pleasant enough). The grounds are mostly done out in lawn, so there is a minimum of concrete (a good thing, considering the rather harsh exterior design of the hotel building itself). We enjoyed the food at the evening buffet. It becomes a bit samey perhaps, over the days, but is more than acceptable.

Apart from the pool and the beach itself (which has 'value for money' waves and where one can also take a lovely long walk by the high dunes, away from the swimmers and sunbathers), the hotel has two tennis courts, a gym and even a four lane ten pin bowling alley. The location's appeal is down to personal taste but, for us, the fact that the hotel stands pretty much by itself on this stretch of coastline (bar a couple of apartment buildings), was a plus point. It is not an over crowded setting, perfect for individuals and families who do not require nightlife and busy towns nearby, but who prefer a more serene environment. We hired a car and went on day trips when in the mood for culture and sight-seeing generally. Shops-wise, there are none in the hotel proper, but there are two basic shops just outside - one selling beach towels and other such accoutrements and another selling anything from postcards, sun block and toiletries to ice creams, washing detergent and potatoes - ie. nothing fancy, but an interesting melange of basics.

Overall, this property proved a very good choice for our family. We were comfortable and well looked after by polite and friendly staff and it proved a good base from which to explore Porto and other smaller towns in the region.

Room tip: Nicest rooms have sea views. Just 4 specific rooms have extra deep balconies that are a bonus if available and worth asking for.

As part of our Portuguese Coastal Camino with the wonderful "Wandering the World" team we stayed here for a night after a lovely walk along the coast. this is a resort right on the Atlantic coast that has everything from tennis courts to a large pool and direct beach access. The staff are very helpful and the rooms quite a good size. it's quiet and a great place to relax after a day of walking the coast. it's a quiet location that's a bit out of town but that makes for a restful sleep. thanks to the hotel & Wandering the World for making our brief visit so restful.

Room tip: Grab a room with a view of the ocean.
