We had a great time visiting Ironclad Distillery. The staff was very friendly. Owen took care of us and was very knowledgeable and helpful. Three of us had Bourbon Flights and the 4th person had a cocktail flight. The bourbons were very good and the cocktails were unique and delicious. We bought some to take home as well as t-shirts and other items that were for sale. We would definitely visit again.
Although they didn't have the tour when we visited, my husband and I both bought the flights. You get to choose 4 to try out of 6 offered. The price was decent. We sat outside and enjoyed the nice hot day. Staff was very friendly. We ended up buying a bottle of both the straight bourbon and a bottle of the coffee barrel bourbon. We'll definitely be back to take a tour, and sip some awesome bourbon again.
Stopped here on a distillery tour day. Great stop. the place is really neat. The bourbon was pretty good. very nice place
Nice spot inside a refurbished storehouse from the era of shipbuilding days long gone. Even have some of the old blast doors in place. The family running this distillery has done a great job renovating this building and turning it into a great spot for hanging out. Good whiskey and fun company here. Highly recommend taking the tour, if available. It's a nice local hangout with a relaxed atmosphere. The name comes from the famous battle of ironclads, which took place just south of the building in the James River during the Civil War, between the USS Monitor and CSS Merrimack. Thus, students of history will also have special appreciation for the location and the meaning behind the name.
I was in the Hampton Roads area and stopped in here for a tasting and Tour, Met the owner Stephen who actually gave me and the family an in-depth tour of their operation. This is another family owned distillery that likes to specialize in one thing and gives you the family feel. During the tour Stephen was very open to discussing things and more-over discussing the history, process, tastes, and joys of whiskey.
You may find the standard traditional whiskey here, but you will also find some unique twists; like their coffee and maple infused products.
I truly enjoyed the tour and talking whiskey with Stephen, probably would have chatted a lot longer but he had other tours to give.
Definitely stop in and have a drink and a chat with them; the only thing I was disappointed with was they were out of 2x T-Shirts! :)
Now that our CNU student is 21, we are able to treat him to the finer things in Newport News--like Ironclad. We visited for the first time before Christmas, and enjoyed the classy decorations and the pleasant atmosphere. We opted to try the cocktails versus the straight bourbons, since the cocktails were geared to the season and topped with fun things like gingerbread men. No regrets--the distillery mixologists did a great job in producing yummy drinks. We wish the distillery were a little closer to campus, but finding it was not difficult and parking was plentiful. We will visit again!
