The Opera meals remain a highlight of our visits to the Houston Grand Opera. Elegant Cafe has maintained its quality: appetizers,. main dishes and desserts continue to please. Service is attentive, friendly, yet polite. On our most recent visit we also noticed an upgrade on the wine selection, which we hope will persist when HGO returns to the Wortham.

Following Hurricane Harvey, the Houston Grand Opera had to reinvent itself in a new location, having built from scratch a new opera house in five weeks in the George R. Brown Convention center. Elegant Cafe faced the challenge of delivering its customary high quality service and food in the same location. Despite long odds, they succeeded. The Founder's Salon Elegant Cafe created out of mobile walls, drapes, a few wall decorations and tables and chairs actually looks rather elegant. Service remains discreet, friendly, courteous, attentive and efficient. The full bar delivers as well as before, and the kitchen has maintained its quality too. At out mot recent visit, we were treated to a smoked, seared Sashimi quality tune, with a delicate horseradish sauce on the side and a few green leaves for decoration. The filet that followed was tender and medium rare, with asparagus and other barely steamed or boiled stem veggies. Dessert was a stylized pot de creme and a strawberry shortcake that was delightful. The list of wines was different from the usual, due to the GRB's contractual obligations. All in all, we had a delightful, relaxed dinner before the show and finished in time to enjoy a wonderful performance of Julius Caesar.

Elegant Café offers pre-opera meals (lunch on Sundays and dinner the rest of the week) before each performance of the Houston Grand Opera. Meals are served in the Patron's hall on the main level. Prior to each performance a menu of choices for a three-course meal are circulated by email to eligible Opera Patrons. There are usually three choices for appetizer, four choices for a main dish and three choices for dessert. Reservations are made online. A wine list is presented at the time of the meal. comfortable chairs and simple but nicely set tables are set up by the Patrons' bar and there is full table service. The food is usually very good in quality and the appropriate quantity. The choices cover a broad range of foods, from vegetarian, to meat-eater to those who prefer fish or fowl. Doors open at 6:00 pm for evening performances and there is the option of spreading the meal throughout the intermissions. The wine list is modest, but reasonable and the prices are very favorable considering the quality of the meals.
