Frankies used to be my go- to Mexican/Tex-Mex restaurant. Local, not even three minutes from my house. Used to be great food great atmosphere great music great servers. Great everything. But that was 3 and 4 years ago. Like most restaurants that survived the pandemic, prices went up and portions have gone down. I don’t eat a lot of ground meat tacos and cheese enchiladas. If there’s any seafood on a Mexican restaurant menu I check that out 1st. Their chipotle salmon used to be my favorite dish and pretty much ordered every time. Then the portion of salmon went down, also started coming out consistently over cooked. Ok. Still close to home. Occasionally would order shrimp Diablo. It was very spicy but Diablo means devil as in hot as hell. Either way it was delicious. Months later I order same thing, ready to sweat, and doesn’t have any spice, heat or taste. So last few months I order salmon tacos. Nice chunks of salmon in 3 tacos. Yumm. Delicious. Todays experience however means I’m not going back for a while if ever. Hardly any recognizable salmon in the tacos but plenty of sauce/grease and maybe some mushrooms and onion. Used to be filling. Sometimes would take one home. Price used to be $14, now it’s $18 and Where’s the salmon? I opened up the tacos because I requested corn tortillas instead of flour. Guess the server or the cook forgot. Either way I was ready to eat. Tortillas aside, had there been some actual salmon would have been fine. I’m usually always a better than 20% tipper but today just wanted to go home. I would have to recommend go somewhere else. Also lots of dust inside on wood separating bar from restaurant. Been there a long time. Needs a good vacuumin and cleaning. The place is so dark inside (maybe so you won’t see the dust) bring your ph flashlight to read the menu. Yes, they enclosed their patio during pandemic and it’s lovely but not insulated so not very cool on a hot Texas day. Inside not a lot cooler but much darker. Looked at the reviews here and mostly all positive - but not current reviews. If you’re just looking for enchiladas, booze and watching sports on TV go to Frankie’s. If you’re really hungry and want great food, a cool respite from the heat and don’t want to leave hungry, go somewhere else with good, up to date reviews. Only place I could recommend in this area would be Fernando’s in the Cityline/State Farm area in Richardson.
