Friends at work told me if visiting Trentham I must visit this bakery.

This is a historical bakery which specialises in wood fired sourdough bread. We ordered both Olive Bread and Crusty Vienna Sourdough.

We also had a coffee and chai tea.

Unfortunately as it was a Sunday they were extremely busy with 45 minute wait for a table. We did not stay for lunch.

Great atmosphere with both indoor and outdoor seating.

We stumbled upon Red Beard as we had just checked out of our accomodation in Hepburn and had driven to Trentham Falls for a visit .. we found Red Beard on TripAdvisor and we were so so impressed! The bread is absolutely amazing and their menu and food was great - I had the Vegetable Soup and my partner had the Moussaka. We left with 3 loaves of bread and some sweets for the drive back to Melbourne. Highly recommend!!!

We started the day (last Sunday) by going to the Markets at Gisborne to buy a new ironing board cover and for a walk around. We then headed over to Trentham for the annual Art and Crafts Show in the Mechanics Institute. By then it was time for morning tea and remembering where the Red Beard was off we went. Being the only Café open in Town they were doing a roaring trade both sit down and takeaway. We got there in a lull and managed to find a table, I then joined the queue to order Coffee and Crispy Ginger Nut biscuits. Considering the number of people waiting to order, we got our Coffees and Biscuits in very reasonable time. They were both great, although being very busy it was not overly noisy and we had a relaxing time. I had planned to buy some Sourdough Fruit Bread, but the size of queue negated that idea so home we headed.

They do offer bread making lessons here! The coffee is great. They serve egg and bacon pies here too. Meat pies are available at bakery just 100 meters away. I thought their outdoor setting was so well done with so many real apples hanging on the trees- not eaten by possums!! The bunches of grapes are well hung along the walls! What a lovely fruit garden setting indeed!!

Well kept secret in Trentham indeed!
