We came for the vaunted Vanilla Slice, and we were not disappointed. You might think you've had a good vanilla slice before, but probably nothing like this square of creamy, dense deliciousness. It seems a bit expensive to pay $8.50 for a slab of bakery fare, but when the vanilla slices arrives at your table, you can taste the quality of the produce used and the price makes sense. This thing doesn't wobble on the plate like so many vanilla slices - no gelatine or thickeners in this custard; just good eggs, cream, sugar and vanilla.
We had a lovely chat to the owner as well, who, even though he probably hears it a thousand times a day, was enormously chuffed that we'd enjoyed our cake. We appreciated that he took the time to chat to us about his business, even though it was a busy day for him. We discovered that on his busiest day, he sold over 1100 serves of vanilla slice. Not all that surprising, really!
