While there is not much left of the original fort, the Park Rangers do an excellent job of providing detailed explanations of the history associated with the fort.

Get your tickets on line at least a few days out as they can be sold out. Short ferry ride - 30 minutes? - and you get about an hour or so at the fort. This is plenty of time to read all the markers, stroll around, and visit the museum. Being a fan of Civil War sites, this was always a must see for us and glad we finally were able to make it work. Parking was easy as we used the garage across the street.

This is a tour that everyone who visits Charleston must take! We booked online a few days in advance to make sure we could go when it suited our schedule. We were glad we did because the day’s excursions were all sold out. The ferry ride was excellent and a much smoother ride than we expected, given the windy day. A series of recorded interpretations of sights in the harbor was very informative and well done. The NPS guides were also excellent.

This is a must-see. The ferry ride (on a blustery day) featured a pod of dolphins that accompanied us to the island and back. The interpreter was fabulous, funny and taught the history buffs among us a thing or two. Room to run and a well-done museum round out the experience.

We took the ferry from Liberty Point out to Ft Sumter - about a 5 mile ride by boat. Be sure to make a reservation in advance because the ride is quite popular and only so many can go at once. The fort itself is in disrepair as over 3 stories of the original 50 ft wall have been lost to battles and not replaced. Fortunately, the remainder has been restored and the views from the top are awesome. There is a nice museum on site as well. Garage parking is conveniently located near the very entrance to Liberty Point.
