Camping Near The Beach

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Jul 6, 2023
This is a very beautiful campground with awesome views of the lake! The staff and volunteers were very pleasant. There is store across the street from the campground if you need essentials and they sell ice cream. However, our site 126 for 5 nights had much to be desired. These campsites in this area were pretty close together and don’t offer much privacy. The campground is generally quiet at 11 pm and very dark. So bring flashlights. There is limited parking in this area for your vehicle behind the park office. The water spigots in that area do not work which is unfair for that area. Bring water jugs. We wish we were told about it. There isn’t a port-o-potty near this campsite except you can find a restroom on the beach. There are two trails behind campsite 122 to get there and the beach isn’t a big one. Watch for poison ivy in the brush. The restrooms/shower houses are near site 94 and the first street away from the lake without parking so ADA accessible can be a challenge. There were also restrooms near the group camp with parking but it was not a shower house. The bathrooms weren’t especially clean and some of the toilets were not in working order and could have used a sign. There weren’t any garbage cans at this campground. This campsite is also challenging since some areas are covered in berries. Another problem is the Wi-Fi which caused a constant struggle at this campground and all over the island for guests and the people in my group. T-Mobile would work in and out, AT&T the best and Verizon was the worst. The icing on the cake was being bit by a tick on the campsite and packing up our supplies we keep in tubs to find plentiful earwigs in each and every one of them. We also found them when we got home. Ugh. We would not book this campsite again. Overall, we had a great time watching fireworks and visiting friends on Middle Bass by boat. But, honestly, Put-in-Bay offers much more to do. Kelley’s is more laid back for nature, bike riding and parking can be a challenge in town. The restaurants were good with friendly staff on this very, very pretty island. We would have enjoyed ourselves much, much better if we had a better campsite to meet our expectations. Live and learn.

We were very excited for our anniversary trip to Kelleys Island after booking the reservation 6 months ago. We stayed at Site 32 which was full hookups. Unfortunately, two large garbage dumpsters were right on the grass of our site. You can imagine the odor that emitted from them! Bathrooms were ok. Woman working at the reservation desk was incredibly friendly. We decided to leave 3 days early as there just wasn’t much to do on Kelleys Island. We did it all in one day. I had envisioned so much more from our stay.

We loved the campground. Nearly all the sites are good and the campground was very family friendly. Everyone respected the quiet time rules. The only reason this is only a 4 star is because the bath houses are a mess. They need to be updated. The whole time we were there (5 days), one (of 3) showers and one soap dispenser at one of the 3 sinks was inoperable in the women's shower house. The toilets ran out of toilet paper a couple of times and the floors were full of water from leaking toilets and showers. They were honestly disgusting. We had a great time and enjoyed the island.

We stayed in one of the yurts at the state park. It was a nice trip!

The yurt includes a bathroom, shower, kitchen, table, and space to sleep. Our lot was right next to the lake and overlooking the most popular beach. If you are staying in the yurt, I suggest packing a handful of fitted sheets and actual bedding to go over their mattress covers. Also, some towels!

There are hiking trails within walking distance, but everything on the island is so accessible.

We look forward to coming back to the campground in the future.

The manager at this camp was wonderful. We had run into issues with our camping spot and he did whatever he could and got us into another spot that worked for us. We were very thankful for everything they did. I would however like to advise AGAINST going to the ice cream/ shop across the street from the camp ground, Unk’l Dik’s. I went in with my 6 year old to get ice cream and left speechless at the way we were treated. The guy working there (implied that he was the owner, but not 100% sure) decided it was appropriate to use “F*ck” multiple times towards myself and my 6 year old. It was completely disrespectful, unprofessional, and unnecessary. However as he said to me, “ it is a private business and they can do whatever the f*ck they want”.

The campground itself was nice, the location was gorgeous but the process to reserve a site was the worst experience, Donna in the office was awful, we had to make three trips to the island in person to finally reserve our spot. We were told the section we were in didn’t allow dogs so we made arrangements for ours to stay with family yet several people next to us had dogs, we wished we had brought ours.
