Relaxing Island Camping on a Excellent Lake Beach

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Nov 23, 2014
Located on the north side of the island, this is a great state campground offering relaxing island RV, tent, group, cabin (2) or yurt (2) camping on an excellent sandy lake beach with a fishing pier, boat launch and the famous glacial grooves a short walk away. The campground is equipped with 82 electrified sites, 45 non-electric sites, flush toilets, shower house, dump station, amphitheater, picnic shelter with tables, volleyball court, playground and a small nature center in the park office; pets are allowed at some sites. The beach area has a changing booth, latrine and fish cleaning house. The best parts of the beach are near the group campsite or at the other end towards the boat launch; the middle is narrower and rockier but more peaceful if one seeks solitude. The beach is wonderful in the mid to late summer as the shallow Lake Erie water warms-up and the beach is along a small harbor opening to the northeast which shelters it from virtually all storms helping to retain its clean, warm water. Kelleys Island also offers several other natural areas with short hiking trails to explore. The campground is reached by taking the Kelleys Island ferry from Marblehead, OH; after disembarking the ferry, take Lakeshore Drive west towards the center of town and turn right onto the main inland road, Divisional Street, and travel north about 1.5 mi (2.4 k) nearly to the end and the campground entrance is on the right. Reservations can be made online for the cabins, yurts and many of the campsites; typical of a state park the cost is reasonable but one also needs to consider the cost of the ferry which can be substantial especially if brining over an RV.

ok, drove 12 1/2 hours to stay in a rent a camp over the 4th. It was FILTHY DIRTY. Bugs (dead and alive) mold, dirt! Supposed to sleep 4 adults - only 2 cots!!! Staff was horrible, stayed 5 minutes, made us pay for a day! Horrible, terrible, awful. Stayed one night in a hotel and got the heck off that cursed island! We were supposed to be there 7 days! We lasted 12 hours! Worst travel experience ever! Never again! My kids refer to it as the SHED OF SHAME!

My friend and I ventured with our boys, her pop up and no husbands. My friend parked on the pad in such a way that our mini van didn't fit all the way on the pad. It took hours to set up the camper and then security told us we can't have our van in the grass. Being the middle of the week the spots next to us were vacant. I explained our situation and asked could we please park the car in an empty spot? If someone comes to use it we will move it. I was told we created our problem and we have to fix it ! The dumpsters were too full to close. Nobody came to use the spots left vacant all week. The staff cared more about enforcing their rules than on helping their guests.

My family and I stayed at Kelleys Island State Park Campground for 5 days during the end of May-beginning of June this year. Part of our group slept in a pop-up trailer and stayed in site 94. My husband and I camped in a tent, and we wanted electricity, so we chose site 128.
I've camped many times over the past few years, and I would rate Kelleys Island Campground as one of the best campgrounds I've ever camped at. The grounds were well-kept, the sites were spread out, and most importantly: the bathrooms were kept clean!
Behind site 128 and the yurt (site 127), is a path leading directly to the beach! It was very handy to have the path right behind our site. Here are some other site tips I gathered: sites 112-129 have a lot of trees compared to the other sites (in other words: more shade). Sites 101, 97, 95, 93, 92, 91, 89, 87, and 85 were RIGHT ON the shoreline to the lake. There is a small rock wall dividing the camp site from the water (no beach), but those sites were beautiful!
The rest of the campground consists of three loops, and those sites were far away from the lake.
Overall, we had a wonderful time at this campground and I recommend it!
